Although “Sita Brings the Blues” and “The Ramayana” are comprised of the same stories, Sita Sings the Blues incorporates both a more modernized retelling along another story with the same cultural and traditional values in the Ramayana. The Ramayana was used to create a story that serves to encompass Nina Padley’s life affairs into Sita Sings the Blues. The unquestioning feelings of love that are held by Sita and directed towards Rama is prevalently emphasized.

In Sita Sings the Blues, Rama and Sita portray the ideal husband and wife of ancient Indian culture. Padley’s version portrays Sita as more of a victimized woman , than a strong woman who respects dharma.
