This essay has been submitted to us by a student. This is not an example of the work written by our writers.

“Cogito Ergo Sum”- “I Think, Therefore I am”. This famous statement by Rene Descartes has been studied for the past few centuries. Decarte’s belief that anything that we are capable of perceiving could be doubted. What we see, touch, feel are not real. Only our thought and imagination has made those objects real. His belief that if we exist on this planet, then only the things around us exist otherwise nothing exists. But it is very important to analyze basic foundations on which Descartes philosophy stands. Almost all of the Descartes philosophy is rooted and founded upon these four precepts of logic which he never violates: to believe nothing except what is clear and distinct, to divide problems into appropriate parts, to proceed from the simple to the complex, and to make sure nothing is left out. If these four percepts of logics are carefully analyzed then one can grasp the essence of “I Think, Therefore I am”. “I Think, Therefore I am” is a statement which meaning might look vague from initial observation but after careful analysis of its roots, it starts to make more sense.

My presence in this universe exists only in my thinking or in my mind. But, it is really true? To analyze this question, let’s observe the counter statement of “cogito ergo sum”, “I am Therefore I Think”. To think we need a mind, when one says I am it signifies the human body. When one says, I think it signifies the human mind. The human mind and the Human body are two different entity residing under the same roof. They can be dissected but they never fail to leave one another. Moreover, they are like two sides of the same coin, they cannot be seperated. But, the question is whether the human mind is superior or the body. If the human body or our physical existence in this universe was superior then it would be fair to say “I am therefore I think” but that cannot be claimed to be true without some detail contemplation.

For instance, let’s take an example where our existence precedes the thought. From the scientific point of view, human minds gradually evolved from some low-level organisms. This shows the human mind is evolved from the creature that did not have any capability to think and understand. If we exist in this universe then we are evolved from some form of the organism which did not have any power to think and imagine. Even in those prehistoric time, when a human did not have any power to meditate over their existence there were creatures. Human minds gradually developed over time and humans started questioning themselves whether the human mind is superior or the human body. If we look from a biological point of view then, the human body or our existence was always superior then the human mind or our thought process.

However, let’s analyze the counterexample. It is very important to understand whether this statement applies to human beings or every other living organisms in the universe. Everything in this universe is doubtable. How can one be sure of the things that are doubtable? For instance, last night I had a strange dream of my grandparents. I woke up at midnight with tears all over
