It is important when learning takes place in a social atmosphere it is imperative to produce a encouraging atmosphere with everyone attending to feel at ease in an environment where the learners feel safe to express their own opinions. In todays society students come from all diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences and needs. It is important to layout ground rules to avoid any unrespectful behaviour or discrimination.

Teaching respect and appropriate behaviour within a learning environment will also travel with them in later life. When working with scholars at the football academy I would use a contract which laid out ground rules of what is expected of them and what would happen if they breached they contract conditions. Each player would have to read this first and then sign this. An example of some of the conditions that would be in the contract would be no toleration of discrimination, always arrive on time to training and lessons, attend every lesson and respect your fellow scholars. Failure to comply with these conditions would result in disciplinary action taken by the staff or by local authorities depending on serious the incident is. Also, being a good role model can also promote appropriate behaviour and respect.

As the teacher the students will be looking up to you so it is key to lead by example and give of the right impression on how respect people. Simple ways of doing this can be being polite, showing respect and demonstrating behaviour we want learners to show. By doing this it will create a safe and relaxed environment in which the students can focus and participate more. Part B: Ways to promote equality and value diversity.

Gravells (2014, p.60) defines equality in learning as “the rights of learners to have access to, attend, and participate in their chosen learning experience”. She also goes on to say that “this should be regardless of age, ability and circumstances” Gravells (2014, p.60). Diversity goes one step further by “valuing the differences between individuals and ensuring they are particiapting” Wilson (2008, p.27). One of the key words that can be taken from both definitions is participate.

One of the terms I learnt while on the course which can help promote equality and diversity is ‘inclusive learning’. Inclusive learning links to both equality and diversity as it is a learning environment where everyone is included in the activity and everyone takes part. This would allow the teacher to treat everyone as equal and respect no matter what they learning level is, race, gender or learning style. Also, to help promote these within the class room I would make sure that; I offer alternative learning aids such as electronic, paper and demonstrations whenever possible.

Insure that support and needs of learners are addressed. Treat all learners with respect and dignity Do not have favourites Use appropriate activities Challenge inappropriate/discriminatory attitudes/behaviour are non-judgemental use questions which are worded so as not cause embarrassment to learners. Using the master  acronym would help me promote equality and valuing diversity as it would allow me to write down ways in which I can teach everyone the same and not exclude anyone from when I am teaching. The six steps that it offers would give me ways and ideas to create an even playing field when taking a class. An example of this when I am planning a lesson I might use pictures and words in handouts and presentations which represent different cultures, ages and ability in order to embrace equality and diversity.

Part C: The importance of identifying and meeting the needs of learners. Before planning any of my lessons or sessions it is important to understand the students and see how they learn and if there are any special requirements that are needed for them to make they learning experience better. Identifying learners’ needs is an important aspect of teaching as it allows you to differentiate lesson plans. Each learner needs can vary, for example have specific issues like finical problems or low level of English. Knowing these issues as a teacher will be able to provide learners with support.

One way in which the academy I work at identifies learners’ needs is by the application process and the interview stage. This process insures that learners are on the right programme to help them achieve the goal of going into a certain career path. We also tell the learners about how they will be assessed on the course as it will give them an understanding and won’t come to them as a surprise. The application process is also good because it gives sections for the students to tell us if they require and assistants and how we can help them during the course with this. Part D: Ways to maintain a safe and supportive learning environment.
