Bryan Lee O’Malley (born February 21, 1979) is an indie Canadian of Korean descent cartoonist and author.
O’Malley is author of notable graphic novels that include Seconds, Scott Pilgrim series and Lost at Sea. He wrote and illustrated Scott Pilgrim, The New York Times Bestseller from 2004-2010 and Seconds, in 2014. (usatoday.com) O’Malley was born in London, Ontario, Canada. He attended Film Studies at the University of Western Ontario, but dropped out before completing the course.
(archive.is) O’Malley began the comic business by translating Japanese manga into English, like Even A Monkey Can Draw Manga, but at this time, manga was still unpopular in North America.(comicsalliance.com) That book, was the influence that led O’Malley to publish Lost at sea. “It (Scott Pilgrim) barely sold the first year”, said O’Malley while working in a restaurant in 2004 in Toronto. (publishersweekly.com) O’Malley’s first notable work, Lost at Sea, published by Oni Press in 2003. One year later, he published Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life (2004), which O’Malley said it “barely sold” anything in that year.
(publishersweekly.com) At the release party of Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life, O’Malley said “…about only 50 people showed up to the party….. I had to get a job immediately after the release party.” (publishersweekly.com) O’Malley was barely having little success during 2003-2009 (because he was not well known). In 2010, the last book in the series, Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour, became the most popular comic book in the series in the world. (archive.is) But with the help of the motion picture releasing that same year, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, the book series and O’Malley began to be well-known (even though the film was a box office making $47.7 million against a budget of $60-$80-$90 million) and the fan base grew bigger. (the-numbers.com/movies) O’Malley’s main style is Japanese-style manga.
Both Seconds and Scott Pilgrim use the act same style of art. (1 book is in possession, usatoday.com image) All of his books are to be considered Contemporary, because all his books revolve on modern culture, doing everyday things, and “diversity” within the people, many people of “different race”. On my only drawing, I used the same technique of facial sketch on every drawing. In Thanos Vs.
The New Avengers, I incorporated a similar look of Scott Pilgrim to Thanos from the cover of Scott Pilgrim Volume 4. Every character was made using the same face sketch technique. roundness of the head, hand, body, and arms; and minor shadow was used to make The Avengers look like they are popping out in each angle anyone might look at it. I had to draw 12 lines were Thanos sits on top of, and make it look like it has 24 lines for all 24 Avengers.
I decided to make the artwork, because this is week 1 of release of the movie, and since the movie is really popular and the most anticipated of 2018. This artwork falls in the category of contemporary artwork, because it is 21st century art style, and with 21st century culture of superheroes that is currently popular within young audiences. Making this artwork is combining two popular subjects into one artwork. The biggest innovation that Bryan Lee O’Malley has done is helping with the contribution of popularizing manga and creating a new style of manga too.

Accomplishments include the adaptation of Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World to become a a still beloved manga-based movie (rottentomatoes.com). An artwork that inspired me to choose Bryan Lee O’Malley was an edited version of his artwork used in Lil Uzi Vs.
The World (2016). It might not be an original idea, but this album cover always had my attention. I had my attention at the supposed manga version of Lil Uzi Vert and the girl on top. This means, Lil Uzi Vert is “..already famous, surrounded by fans and money, and he only care about his nice girl on his mind.
The Haters/Evil exes are hating on him, thus keeping the Scott Pilgrim touch…” (genius.com). The album used attention-calling colors (neon and (as the title suggests it) (genius.com). I would’ve chosen The Perfect LUV Tape, but the cover of the album didn’t have my attention due to the use of lower tone of colors and the black background with small artwork. I had to choose either one, I’d choose Lil Uzi Vert Vs. The World album cover.
