Although time has passed and democracy has become the most common way of government among all of the countries all around the world, there are still territories under autocratic and repressive governments which are ruled by dictators with no freedom of speech or simply no freedom of information. Thomas Hobbes, an English philosopher who is considered one of the founders of modern political philosophy, the 17th century, had the ideology of men being in a natural state of war and selfish among each other. “men were in a condition of war one against another, yet in all times kings and persons of sovereign authority, because of their independency, are in continual jealousies, and in the state and posture of gladiators, having their weapons pointing, and their eyes fixed on one another…which is a posture of war.” said Hobbes in his own book, Leviathan, in which he expresses his opinions and ideas about how we should be ruled by a strict monarchy.

The only true and correct form of government is an absolute monarchy, said, Hobbes. He believed men are violent by nature either to protect their loves on or to gain a good reputation. He believed men have no need of pleasure to have a dignity live, and that we are selfish creatures each with our own personal interests. Which is why we need a government with no personal interest for each citizen, but for all as one. In Hobbes’ state of nature there is complete liberty for society in the idea that each member may do whatever he or she pleases without having to worry about infringing upon the rights of the rest of society; in other words, one is allowed to do whatever necessary to pursue their own happiness. However, there is no guarantee of safety and protection from that same power which is granted to every other member of society. “Hereby it is manifest that during the time men live without a common power to keep them all in awe, they are in that condition which is called war; and such a war, as is of every man, against every man.” Hobbes. Hobbes conveys the idea that without the common power of a universal authority to regulate society, mankind will self-destruct due to the weaknesses of our own human nature Hobbes.

Hobbes’ government less world did have one advantage: All people were inherently equal. In fact, their equality of capability was partly what made life so terrible, because no single person was ever able to rise above anyone else. Hobbes thought equality needed to be protected, and U.S. government has evolved to more firmly embrace the concept of equality. After the Civil War, the adoption of the 14th Amendment, for example, forbade any jurisdiction from denying a person equality before the law. Before that, the Declaration of Independence, which stated that all men are created equal, provided only a conceptual foundation for equality in government. Which partly connects with the idea of communism by Karl Marx, in which government all men were to be equally treated and benefited

According to In Homeland Security, Trump’s government reflects Hobbes objectives such as safety, gain, and reputation. For instance, by keeping the country in peace is a way of preventing a man from fighting against each other for limited sources and preserve America’s reputation. The NSS embraces the Hobbesian notion that the world is in a perpetual state of conflict due to competition for power or limited resources. Trump’s policy supports taking action in pursuit of Hobbes’ three primordial objectives and promotes nationalistic values and interests.

North Korea, an East Asian country ruled under a dictatorship by Kim Jong-un, is one of the best examples of all nations that have Hobbes’s ideology of how we should be ruled. Human right is not even mentioned in North Korea, there is not freedom of speech, “An estimated 200,000 people are in dire condition in North Korea’s prison camps, or Kwan-li-so. Extreme torture, sexual violence, slave labor, starvation, and execution are commonplace”, according to The New York Times. Even though the United States and North Korea are two completely different countries with different governments, different societies, with different ideologies when it comes to how to rule a country, we can still find similarities on how Hobbes had a big influence in particulars way of each country’s .
