The topic of volunteering in elementary schools is based on Costco Volunteer Reading Program. Our group’s focus is on the reading program implemented by the company Costco Wholesale which launched in 1998. Interested staff are trained to tutor children who need extra help developing better reading skills (Volunteer, 2010). The goal is to provide one-on-one tutoring with each child to identify areas for improvement. Tutors aim to help strengthen students reading skills, which are essential to everyday life and to success in the work place. Identification of the problem Volunteer reading programs have shown to be effective in early learning environments such as elementary schools. Research on volunteer mentor programs has shown positive outcomes for both the mentor and pupil.

As a result, many schools are seeking to retain volunteers to aid children in need of extra support (Danielle, 2014). Today’s youth face many disadvantages in early learning settings. For example, due to limited school budgets many teachers are not provided help, such as an aid. The student to teacher ratio, 26:1, proves to be a major drawback for students who are not provided a strong parental support network necessary for academic and social development. Research Methodology For gathering information, we used use a combination of Purdue University databases such as Academic Search Premier, Credo Reference, CQ Researcher, and Science Direct. Using the databases provided us with a wide range of approved credible sources. Our group is planning to an interview with the organizations program coordinators, . will help us understand the nature of this problem better and people’s experiences with said problem. Interviews will also give us feedback on this program.

Does tutoring children in reading affect any other aspects of their life positively? Do volunteers need special training/permission to tutor children? How does the elementary age group benefit from volunteer reading programs? How can school attendance improve through adult volunteer reading partners? What are the strengths and weaknesses of a reading program? How can the strengths be used to help educators design or implement other effective mentor programs? How does absenteeism effect school funding for programs? Why are urban areas facing difficulty in enlistment of parental volunteers? How do mentors benefit through the volunteering experience? How can volunteers within a community be informed of upcoming reading programs? Reasons for Interest in Research Motives and Benefits for Volunteers …Using a functional approach to investigating why people volunteer, Clary et al. (1998) proposed a model that incorporates both unselfish and self-interested reasons.

The model contains six functions and can be understood as motivations to volunteer and benefits associated with volunteering: Values: volunteering allows people to express personal values of an altruistic, or unselfish, humanitarian concern for others; Understanding: being able to learn new skills or to use existing skills that may otherwise go unused; Career: benefits related to one’s career development: Social: allowing socialization with others; Protective: reducing negative feelings such as guilt about being prosperous; Enhancement: benefits related to personal growth and development. Benefits to Children In the educational environment, participation in mentoring programs has been shown to result in positive effects for young participants (Volunteer, 2010). This includes higher school achievement (Eby, Allen, Evans, Ng, & DuBois, 2008), increased social competence and emotional adjustment (DuBois, Holloway, Valentine, & Cooper, 2002) and a more positive self- image (Dubois et al., 2002).

Proposed Deliverable In the beginning phase of planning out the deliverable, our group initially agreed we would make fliers with the organization’s contact information so any interested parties could have a way to become involved in the community. Eventually, we decided on making a pamphlet about Costco’s Reading Program as well as fliers. By making both, we could reach a broader audience. The pamphlets will provide background information on the organization as well as the benefits one would be providing to the community through being a volunteer mentor. The pamphlet/flier will also have an attractive logo signifying the importance of being a volunteer in addition to a mission statement supporting volunteer mentors. Logo Mission statement To promote and advocate for elementary age children who are in need of help in the development of reading skills within the local community.
