Ernesto J. Vargas Prof. Kroger SOCA 103-09 3/19/2018 Nineteen Eighty-Four “Nineteen Eighty-Four” by George Orwell’s presents a negative picture, a society that is ruled by totalitarianism. The government that is created in the novel is ruled by Big Brother and that consist of three branches.
“The Ministry of Truth, which concerned itself with news, entertainment, education and the fine arts. The Ministry of Peace, which concerned itself with war. The Ministry of Love, which maintained law and order. And the Ministry of Plenty, which is responsible for economic affairs.” (Orwell 6).
The main character Winston Smith does not accept the ideology of Big Brother. There are three states in the Novel Oceania, Eurasia, and Anastasia. In the novel Orwell subscribes that Oceania is at war with Anastasia and alliance with Eurasia. Nationalism is really important in this novel because there is totalitarianism in the novel and people are racist.
The effect of Nationalism in the novel is that there is no freedom in the city. Nationalism ruins everybody’s life’s because they go to work then they go home there is no social life. In the novel the Party controls everything and that is part of Nationalism. Freedom is a really important theme in the novel because the novel is based on how people do not have freedom in 1984. Freedom is something that is controlled by nationalism because the Party “Ingo” is controlling everything in the city and they do not let their citizens express their feelings and have friends. In the novel people do not have freedom because there are telescreens everywhere, so wherever you go somewhere there will be telescreens.
The technology if telescreens started after the Revolution that means before people had freedom and privacy but they still were not treated well. The telescreen is a powerful metaphor for the loss of privacy in a totalitarian state. “It is inessential to the political them of the novel, which is the feasibility of thought control through propaganda, education, psychology, censorship, lobotomizing, stirring up war fever terror, and, above all, the manipulation of historical records and of language.” (Poster 197). The reason there is no freedom in London is because the citizens cannot express their self’s and also they are not allowed to read books, newspaper, magazines and writes in a diary. There are three classes in the society: the high class, the middle class and the lower class which are called the “Proles”.
The reason there are three different types of classes in the society of London because the high class are allowed to have more freedom than the middle class. The middle class is the worst because they are not allowed to have freedom whatsoever and the higher class people are allowed to torture them and execute them because they work for the Party which is called, “Big Brother.” The low class has more freedom then the middle class because the city considers them that they are not intelligent and also they are no harm to the city and they are really poor. That means the only people that are allowed to read books, newspaper, magazine and write in a diary are the Proles. In the society the citizens are not allowed to pick their friends and they are not allowed to fall in love. The only reason people get married is to have kids and if they do not have kids the government will split them up and they will never see each other again.
In that time there was no freedom whatsoever their life was based on work and then after work they can go and have a drink and then they go home and sleep. Orwell expresses his feelings that in that time of the year there was no freedom for the citizens they were watched 24 hours 7 days a week by telescreens or by the Thought Police. The Thought Police are policing that can fly in a helicopter and they can go to the window of your house and see what you are doing. Sometimes there is Thought Police that go undercover to catch a specific citizen.
Totalitarianism is that the government rules everything in the country and they want to control the people in their country and also their thoughts. Totalitarianism is related to nationalism because they control everybody that means they have no freedom and that the Party wants all the power they can get so they can do whatever they want in their country and no one can complain. “Totalitarianism not only forbids you “to think certain thoughts” but it dictates what you have to think, it creates and ideology for you.” (Abbot 75-76). Totalitarianism was something that all people in the country hate about the government. The way the government attracts people by believing in the government “Big Brother” is by putting posters of Big Brother, propaganda, there is a picture of Big Brother everywhere like on a nickel, cigarette pack and etcetera.
Goldstein is a person that is against Big Brother and some people like Goldstein, like Winston and Julia, because he wants to change things around in the country and to make it a better country for everybody not only for himself like Big Brother. In Hate week the government had, “a desire to kill, torture, to smash faces with a sledgehammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people like an electric current turning one even against one’s will into a grimacing screaming lunatic.” (Orwell 16). In Hate week the government executes prisoners from Eurasia and the kids love to go and see people getting executed. The children are forced by the Thought Police that if they think that their parents are committing a thought crime they to report to the Thought Police, that means kids are not loyal to their family. The three slogans of the ministry of Truth is: War is peace, Freedom is slavery, and, Ignorance is strength.
The reason the government wants their citizens to believe in that slogan is to make the citizens appreciate the government for whatever they are doing for the country and to love Big Brother. The significance of war is peace is that Oceania goes to war with Anastasia and alliance with Eurasia is because they are racist against Chinese people and they want power and their land. The government thinks that when they all the territories there will be peace in the world, which actually the war they are doing is making things worse. The significance of freedom is slavery because in Oceania there is no freedom for the middle class citizens so if they do something against freedom they will get tortured or executed. The reason that the government wants power is because, “power is the willingness and ability to kill, control, manipulate, oppress, and torture human beings.” (West 275-276). The record of department is a branch with the Ministry of Truth.
The primary job of the Record department, “is not to reconstruct the past but to supply the citizens of Oceania with newspapers, films, textbooks, telescreens programmers, plays, novels, with every conceivable kind of information, instruction of entertainment, from a statue to a slogan, from a lyric poem to a biological treatise, and from a child’s spelling book to a newspeak dictionary.” (Orwell 45). In the society when people go and confess to their crime they get executed or tortured and they never get heard again. There are some people that are not even dead but no one knows where they are like in the Novel Winston discovers that his mom and his sister is not there anymore, he does not know where they went. Also when someone assumes that someone is dead and then they see them at a public place, they are giving a testimony then they are going to vanish forever, the government re-writes history because the government does not want his city to know the truth about what is going on so whatever the government wants to make history it will be history. In the novel O’Brien explains to Winston, “the past is whatever the records and the memories agree upon.
And since the party is in full control of all records, and in equally full control of the minds of its members, it follows that the past is whatever the Party chooses to make it.” (Orwell 222). Winston is keeping on having flashbacks when about his childhood and how the world is different before the revolution. He cannot forget the death of his mom because back then there is still privacy, love and friendship, and the members of the family stood by one another without needing to know the reason. In his flashback he also remembers that the citizens in Ocean where making boots about out of paper and half the population was barefoot.
Before the revolution women had to work in the coal mines and children women had sold to the factories of the age of six. Also there where capitalist those people own everything, they use to lead the city so always had the good stuff, like the good food, a nice house and etcetera. Before the revolution it is the most terrible oppression, injustice and poverty.
