This article is an argument pertaining to how critical race theory can be used to point out issues that are noticeable within the cultural competence model (Abrams & Moio, 2009). One of the main arguments against the cultural competence model is that it does not go deep enough into the problem of the different forms of oppression (Abrams & Moio, 2009). There is also a large argument that students are not ready to handle conversations over race and oppression, while at the same time some teachers are not trained properly to teach about the subject at all (Abrams & Moio, 2009). CRT is explained by Abrams and Moio (2009) to have a goal that reviews, break down, reframe for the good the bond between races, discrimination, and the power in society through different tenets. Through CRT there was formed eight specific points in which to try and tear down the walls of racism and anything associated with it (Abrams & Moio, 2009).

CRT has looked into how it is difficult to include cultural teachings into the education of teachers and also looks into how the teachers are not prepared to teach about race and oppression (Abrams & Moio, 2009). There is suggested to be ways in which to have critical thinking for teachers to have towards teaching about race and its associating factors (Abrams & Moio, 2009). According to Abrams and Moio (2009), CRT questions the belief of colorblindness and if it is implemented in the curriculum, it is stated that there is no way that it should not help prevent colorblindness and the denial of racism in society when used properly by teachers. CRT is also said to help students move past the barrier of trying to have simple knowledge over racism and gives them more firm guidelines to follow in their social work field (Abrams & Moio, 2009). The only issue with the cultural race theory is that it is difficult to place it in an already full social work curriculum (Abrams & Moio, 2009).

CRT is important for teachers to include in teaching students so that they may learn about the many different aspects of race and oppression so they are prepared when they go out into the social work field (Abrams & Moio, 2009). Reflection The first thing I learned while reading this journal article was the lack of knowledge and training in teaching about race and oppression since all of my professors in the social work school have thoroughly addressed the topic. According to Abrams and Moio (2009), teachers are not prepared to teach about oppression along with the little room to implement it into the curriculum. The second thing I learned from this article is that so many white students believed that their privilege formed a wall from them being able to learn about the topics of racism and oppression (Abrams & Moio, 2009). I know that many whites are racist, and some are without even knowing it, but the percentage that believed they could not learn due to their privilege was astounding.

Lastly, the article taught me more about colorblindness, due to the fact that I had never learned much on this topic in school. CRT has the goal to include more colorblindness in the curriculum to help teach more students about the issues of racism in all aspects of life (Abrams & Moio, 2009). Practice Application Although I cannot help teach teachers about racism and oppression, I can practice learning about the topic myself by reading more on the topics and implementing them into my life. White people listen to white people more than minorities, so I could have a voice in teaching white people about the racism and oppression that is occurring. I will work harder to open my eyes so that my white privilege does not block my view of the challenges that minorities face in society as a whole. I will do more research on how to not let my demographic standing prevent me from being accepting of other races. Lastly, even though I have not learned much about how to address colorblindness in my life, I can start to learn more on the topic so that I can use it so that I do not see any race as different.

This article discusses the lack of equality within the social work practice theory between clients, social workers, and the companies the social workers work for (Hasenfeld, 1987). The social work practice theory does not explain in depth the relationship and outcome between the client and the providers in which are helping them (Hasenfeld, 1987). A few sources of power are accepted by the social work practice theory, but it does not address the influence that the company in charge of the social workers has over them (Hasenfeld, 1987). The agency is in control of everything basically that happens with the social worker and client, these agencies make the decisions and allow only certain resources to be given (Hasenfeld, 1987). Some agencies have more power than other agencies over their social workers depending on the area in which they are from and the demographics of that area (Hasenfeld, 1987). Since the worker and agency are working with clients for money, the resources and help are not always given depending on different factors such as the demographics of the client (Hasenfeld, 1987).

This means that essentially the wealthier a client is, the better care they will receive from the agency and social worker, but either way the client and social worker both have very little power because of the agency (Hasenfeld, 1987). As explained by Hasenfeld (1987), the perfect scenario is for there to be an equilibrium of power between the social worker and client. There are times when it is right for the social worker to have more power over the client and much of these kinds of situations are places like hospitals where the client does not have a choice but to be there, but other times it is the client who should have power (Hasenfeld, 1987). When a social worker is given power resources from the agency and towards the client, they can form interventions to help the patient (Hasenfeld, 1987). This being stated, the social worker needs to be given more power to be able to efficiently help the client and give them resources (Hasenfeld, 1987).

According to Hasenfield (1987), the author wants for there to be a change in the social work practice theory where the job of the social workers and agencies is to help clients take control of their situations. The author describes how clients can gain more power over agencies through four different points, and that the social workers are who can play a big part in clients gaining more power (Hasenfeld, 1987). The author wants there to be an exchange between the agency, social worker, and client to form an equilibrium, rather than the inequality that is taking place (Hasenfeld, 1987). Reflection I knew that health care providers did not want to deal with people who did not have insurance or much money, but not to the extent that the journal article states. According to Hasenfeld (1987), larger hospitals will move poor patients to other hospitals so that they do not lose money on the patient, while filling the larger hospital with patients with insurance. The clients with more money can have more say in which kind of treatment they receive from the hospital.

Secondly, I never realized how much control agencies have over social workers and the resources in which they could give to clients. The agency controls the social workers so that they stay on task of what the goals are that the agency is trying to reach (Hasenfeld, 1987). Lastly, the author discusses how much power and influence a social worker can have on a client when able to. The author discusses how social workers can help with interventions and other services for the client, along with allowing the client to seek their own control over their life (Hasenfeld, 1987).
