Virtue is a behavior of showing high moral standards and accountability. It is having a well lead mindset that focuses on Christ. It can be taught by friends, family, parents, and peers. Virtue demonstrates itself in action. Moral virtue is the only practical road to effective action. 2 Peter 1:5 says “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge.” If you call someone virtuous, you are saying that a person is living according to high moral standards. A virtuous person must avoid evil and the way of being a good character and making purposeful choices for the good of others. Avoiding evil is sufficient to make one virtuous. “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals” 1 Corinthians 15:33 (Avoid the evil). In the book Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis, Lewis expresses Ransom portrays a virtuous character because he makes choices that promotes the good of others, avoids evils, and is a morally good person.

Honesty, compassion, courage, generosity, fairness, and self-control are all examples of virtue. Ransom was several of these characteristics in order to be virtuous. He had a choice in the beginning that affected him through the whole book. He went on a walk without telling anyone where he was going much less that he was going at all. Doing this led him running into Devine and Weston, which they poisoned him, and when he wakes up, he ends up on a whole new planet. Through the book the choices that Ransom made were accidental rather than intentional.

He had a big impact on his life the day that he chose to go on a walk. He could have taken an approach with a plan taking a walk and not telling anyone, instead of telling no one that he was doing it at all. When he saw the small child getting tortured by Devine and Weston he stood up and told them to leave the child alone. “Ransom was very much perplexed. There was something about the whole scene suspicious enough” (Lewis, Chapter 1, 15). This was a very virtuous act; he saved a little child. This left Ransom in an absolute awful situation.

He did not mean to get kidnapped, or get poisoned, or even going to Mars. He also had the choice to talk to Hyoi, if he did not talk to him, the two of them would not have been friends and remember each other, even after Ransom goes back to earth. Being friendly to the large monster, that probably scared him, helped Ransom escape Malacandra. He had such a close bond with some of the creatures there because of his friendliness. Without his compassion, generosity, and courage he would not have gotten back to earth, as well as, the help from Hyoi.

A huge virtuous character would be Hyoi, he is a seal-like species that leads the hunting party that kills Hranka. They first met by running in to each other in a forest. They started talking about each of their different planets. Ransom explains to Hyoi that earth must be the silent planet because it separated the heavens at one point. Hyoi tells Ransom that Oyarsa is head god of all gods in the heavens. Devine and Weston killed Hyoi while both him and Ransom were hunting for hnakra.

In contrast, if the whole world functioned the same and everyone made the same decisions just to avoid evil then it would just be the exact same. There would be no adventure, no one would be promoting goodness, and the world would not be improving. Virtue does not only require words or emotions but also a big thing with virtue is actions. In order to make anything true you have to show it not say it. An example of this is Eve and the serpent, the snake pressured her in eating the fruit off of the tree in the middle of the garden when God specifically told her what tree to eat off of.

In summary, in the book Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis, Lewis expresses Ransom portrays a virtuous character because he makes choices that promotes the good of others, avoids evils, and is a morally good person. “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge” 2 Peter 1:5. “Mistakes have the power to turn you into something better than you were before. Brian Tracy” This had a strong impact on Ransom’s life, because of him going on the walk and getting himself into trouble he met some amazing creatures on the planet of Malacandra. These creatures helped him along the way finding his way back home. Sometimes doing bad allows the good to come out of you.
