Family health involves determining the health status of the family as a unit, which includes all individuals making up a specific family system. Any impact of any one member of the family unit impacts the health status of the family (Wright & Leahey, 2013).

Family members are emotionally, biologically, and socially connected which impacts the health of all members of the family in different perspectives (Wright & Leahey, 2013). The concept of family health is important due to family connections, which impact family members in different dimensions of health. The family also forms the foundation of the physical as well as the emotional health of individuals, which may positively or negatively impact the health status of the members (Wright & Leahey, 2013). The family plays an important role in providing support to its members in addressing some of the health issues, which makes it important to consider in implementing health promotion strategies (Wright & Leahey, 2013). A decline in the health status of one family member may negatively affect the health status of other family members. Some of the current chronic diseases are also attributed to family connections, which make it important to address the health status of the family as a unit (Wright & Leahey, 2013).

Based on the various strategies for health promotion, a nurse can determine the best strategy to enable targeted individuals to gain more control over and improve their health by partnering with the individuals to understand what effective strategies would work in different family settings (Cecilio et al., 2014). Partnering with the individuals will enable the nurses to advocate for any health issues identified as well as provide the necessary support to achieve specific goals (Cecilio et al., 2014). Partnering will also enable the nurses to mediate between the individuals and the health sector which will help the nurse in determining the best health promotion strategies based on the available resources as well as considerations of individual’s interests and lifestyles (Cecilio et al., 2014). Nurses also possess the necessary skills to assess individual health needs which will enable them in determining the best strategies to implement to targeted individuals to gain control over as well as improve their health (Cecilio et al., 2014).
