In the 21st century technology has been on a route to rule the food industry. Everything that is needed is no longer in a lengthy cookbook. Instead, the search for cooking has been shifted to being one click away. Google, Instagram, Facebook, and even YouTube allows one to get direct access to a recipe without looking through a detailed book. Our perspective on food has directly changed since with the growth to learn. Food has turned toward the views of convincing rather than the traditions it brings. In the fast-moving world of technology, we lose sight of how it affects our daily lives. Majority of what is being presented entices society with their share of loving food.

In Janet Flammang’s writing, The Taste for Civilization: Food, Politics, and Civil Society, she explains the social means of how food, cooking, and eating can bring people together and show them all the different varieties of food a person can encounter. Especially in the food world today we see millions of different apps and reviews to follow suit. The need for cookbooks starts to die replaced with tablets. Rousseau states, ‘are cookbooks obsolete? Cookbooks covered in splatters and sticky notes will soon be of the past’ (88). I remember growing up surrounded by the world of food due to my father’s passion. Our number one thing that we would do on his day off would be cooking up a storm. My favorite parts would be going to the store and grabbing magazines or cookbooks. After rummaging through them my father and I would bookmark the recipe. Later that day we would make the recipes while writing little notes or accidentally spilling food on it. In present time we now look through the web and leave the cookbook on the shelf.

The world is filled with bounties of cultures and identities where everyone has a personal choice that connects them to food. The web opens those doors to shed light onto food, that one can’t simply experience without traveling. In a quick search, the globe is integrated with the hands of society. Each individual brings one another together through the interest of similar taste. In society, cooking can tell a story that are reflections of traditions and cultures. Ideas like this are what make studying food interesting and exciting because there is bound to be informed that an individual would not know from just the surface base of a person. That there is so much rich history that has been passed down from generations. As the world shifts into the presence of high-speed internet, it also brings along food blogs. Blogs are an entity to allows one to not only discover food but the history behind it. It allows an individual to pour their soul into the writing while also giving the recipes. It has links to pages, fun tips, and even a community based within the web pages.

The most famous part of the blogs is how convenient it is for an individual to access. The present generation isn’t the one to pick up a book let alone a cookbook. So instead they would rather look through the innerwebs to discover exactly what they need. Being miles away from home and living off of top ramen, college students use blogs religiously. Especially the female population who feels that they need to make a change and lose the ‘Freshman 15’.

The first year away from college is the time where many gains the extra pounds without noticing. Due to the fact that there is an increase in their drinking habits and the fact they don’t have a kitchen. Then when students hit sophomore, they are stuck in front of the mirror questioning ‘why their favorite jeans don’t fit.’ Especially for female college students, they start to get insecure with their body as they try to get fit. In the first blog ‘Fit University’ the author Sarah Gaines created this community to allow women to inspire each other. Their motto for the blog states, ‘At Fit University, we want to break down these stigmas and open dialogues about all things physical and mental health. Lifelong habits are created in college; Fit University helps college students form realistic, achievable, and sustainable health habits they can continue to practice well beyond graduation.’ Gaines view is for women to look passed the standards that are being placed for women. While also rally up the idea that women have a support system along the way.

In the article Food and Social Media, It explains, ‘The internet has a powerful generator of virtual food comminutes, attracting both professionals and amateurs to discuss, to rate, to ask questions and to find answers’ (Rousseau, 5). The Fit university focuses on the process of healthy eating with helpful tips from subscribers. The whole face and growing interest in this blog reflect Rousseau statement because it connects people. The idea that an individual can be motivated, by the similar stories of others. Sharing one’s health journey through recipes and also pictures of before and after.

Shifting gears ‘The Older Chapters’ written by Colorado student Sarah gives insight about the nature of a budget healthy lifestyle. It focuses its work on trying to survive the college years, but also not gain the 15 pounds. In Foodies it describes that ‘Food blogs work as a kind of online journal where mainly women narrate their food thoughts and practices to an online audience’ (Johnston, 44). That is exactly what Sarah has portrayed through her post. It gave us tips on coupon saving while going grocery shopping. ‘If you haven’t been couponing before, let me attempt to sway you. With the combination of this system and couponing, my husband and I only spend $30 per week on food plus $70 at the beginning of each month for this meal prep’ Sarah explains her views on how couponing helped save money in her budget. Also, quick tips about getting a faster end result by purchasing an instant pot. Allowing students who have no time by throwing all the ingredients in there. Then leading down into healthy recipes that she felt would be useful for the readers.

People sometimes struggle with not have the right knowledge in trying to keep up with a healthy lifestyle. Especially college students because they lived their entire life with moms cooking. Going into the grocery store some students simply do not know what is preferred healthy versus what is not. In the blog Eat ‘Yourself Skinny’ by Kelly she writes ‘Don’t get me wrong, I still love my sweets every now and then, but I’ve honestly never felt better than when I’m eating completely organic, non-processed healthy foods. It was such a learning experience for me since at the time I honestly thought labels like ‘fat-free’ meant healthy and artificial sweeteners like Splenda were good for you.’

In her blog, it is all about the food and getting the body back into shape. In the reading Foodies, it talks about ‘Terms like ‘organic’ refer to food production that avoids harm to the environment from the use of toxic or other poisonous chemicals’ (Foodies, 129). The term organic is used a lot throughout her recipes and making sure nothing is processed or harmful to the body. Her focus is on clean eating to help give you’re the right nutrients without completely starving herself. For the term, clean eating is this factor of not putting unnecessary added sugars in your body. For the example it is the opposite effect that was written in Prelude to Modern Cuisine. Lauden states, ‘Nutrition transition, the sequential global shift from large diets composed of grains to diets high in sugar, oils and meats’ (Lauden 208). States that they eat this diet filled with the components that shouldn’t be eaten at such high quantities. They were adding more fat and sugars that the body couldn’t break down fast enough. For Kelly, she wants to emphasize that there is better when eating a balanced meal of fruit, veggies, carbs, and protein.

Food is an important factor for the human body, and with these blogs, it can help female college students. It allows them to build up the image that they felt was lost in the crazy freshman year. All three of these food bloggers, Fit University, the older chapters, and Eat yourself skinny all use a unique way to better your college experience. They all have different techniques ranging from how fast you want a meal to be done with minimal ingredients, to foods that will taste so great you will forget about the late-night Domino’s. All three blogs were created by women who went through the struggles themselves.

In the concluding chapters of Foodies, it explains the difference of pleasures for women and the male population. The chapter goes into defining the three concepts that correlate with the gender’s perspective, pleasure, care work and knowledge and expertise. My focus was keyed into the first two of pleasure and care work. For the pleasures for women, it is displayed in a different context for the gender. Pleasure for women is to please other making sure her cooking is acceptable. Another factor is that females tend to not feel as though indulging in food isn’t acceptable as the start to poke fun of themselves. Meaning that the author of these blogs shared their writing because that is how women function. They capture the audience of the young female audience because of the emotion and education being spilled. While on top of it all we feel this connection of not indulge in food because we are going to gain weight.

In the reading Word of Mouth, chapter 4 ‘Iconic Cooks’ talks about how it was women’s main role to cook for others. Back in the day, this was what families and women were used to, so hypothetically it has been passed down from generation to generation. ‘Eating, in sum, needs to do more than satisfy the appetite, fill the stomach, and ward off disease. It must be regarded as a pleasure and a higher pleasure at that. Then, and only then, will cooking become a culinary art’ (Ferguson 81-82)? This states that food more than just food. It goes deeper in meaning. It connects people from all over and makes cooking something to look forward to. If the food wasn’t that of high pleasure, people would not care about it. Healthy ways of living are the best way of living, and that is what these three food bloggers are trying to convey to their audience. Cooking and preparing meals isn’t for everyone, but blogs try to make it fun.

Miles away from the sweet smell of mother’s homemade meal and stuck in piles of homework. The journey of a college student is hard when it’s the first time not living under the parent’s roof. The process of no longer having a home conversation with the family at the dinner table. Where there was loads of conversation and the best place to be educated (Carroll, 68). Instead, we are buried by stacks of books and the dollar ramen being sold. As the girls no longer fit in the cute outfits, they search to better themselves. They start to indulge in a virtual world to motivate them to be a healthier lifestyle.

The three food blogs were just the beginning of building a community for women. Some place they can congregate and learn from one another. Food blogs help individuals all around the world gain better knowledge in the food department and how to cook certain dishes without processed ingredients. When researching different blogs people want to focus on what their goal was for writing their blog and connect it back to why they want to follow a blog. Their goal is to hopefully have people try their recipes and end up enjoying cooking just like them. We all need to start somewhere, and food bloggers make it easy to share their stories and recipes with the world. Through food blogs, we can see the heart and soul that the author puts into their food, as they want to inspire others with their own journey.
