It was 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and the world-wide conflict (World War II) began. World War II conflicted from 1939 to 1945, and is the deadliest war ever recorded in history. The impact of the second World War, will have a forever enduring effect on the survivors. In this essay it will be exhibited and clarified how WWII impacted non-military people, making them become civilians with a broken state of mind amid that era.

The majority of non-military people who lived during World War II, were left their social, physical, and psychological well-being broken. The social and economical declines amid WWII, left innerable civilians in poverty, as significant amount of countries were left in bad economic and social conditions. When the war newly broke out, poverty was a major issue. Since many governments spent their money on weapons and supplies for war, it caused a rise in demand for other goods. As a result, inflation occurred. This made it harder for civilians to buy food needed for survival.

The widespread poverty had developed great rates of tuberculosis, malnutrition, and infant mortality which health system’s could do little to beat. This resulted in civilians, experiencing and living through the aftermath of what WWII caused (schools ruined, villages and houses destroyed, workplaces demolished, etc.) Furthermore, in 1941 Hitler agreed to the conscription of women starting to work. They worked in different areas of factories, in agriculture, as well as becoming nurses. Women were assigned with jobs that men were previously assigned to do.

As per men passing away in war casualties, it lowered the likelihood of women getting married, then leaving the children to grow up without fathers. This then left and negative social impact on children as their mother’s needed to take over as head of the family, resulting in children needing to work, hence not receiving education. As families lived in war-torn areas, it was very unsanitary, hence greatly impacting their physical well-being. During the time period of the WWII, civilians were greatly impacted by the war, carrying physical scars of their broken well-being. A significant physical impact left on a civilians’ well-being were toxic illnesses leaving thousands dead. Those who lived in war-torn areas amid the war were identified to have a pourer well-being later in life due to the living standards and sanitation.

Both women, men and children encountered diseases during the war, some being more critical than others. Although thousands of civilians passed away during the war, the majority of those who survived were severely affected by physical health issues. Periods of hunger, heart diseases, diabetes, and diseases such as tetanus, typhoid, smallpox, cholera, and yellow fever, and curbing, were common during the WWII which lead them into a state where their physical health and well-being became critical. A major decline of civilians’ physical state and well-being, impacted their psychological state at an acute level. World War II left innumerable civilians in a crushed state of Psychological well-being.

The effects took a tremendous toll on those who suffered, witnessed or encountered family members, friends and unknown civilians being perished; not only on war field. It also took an immense toll on the destruction left after a battle, along with those “judged unfit to live” and sent to concentration camps. Concentration camps severely impacted the physiological state of civilians. Death imprint, death guilt, the abate capacity to feel, suspicion of false care/aid, and struggle for meaning, are the five psychological themes in what survivors feel, that have been described amid the holocaust.

The grotesque imagery and aftermath of the traumatic time period civilians who stayed in the concentration camps, lead many women, men and children into a state of depression. An innumerable amount of non-military humans were left severely impacted prior, amid and post WWII, in social, physical and phycological ways. The deadliest war ever recorded in history, took an extreme toll on everyone who was the slightest involved. Approximately 70 years later, and peace is still not declared in all countries around the globe. War is still occuring in the modern day life that mankind lives in today.

The ongoing war in the middle east is affecting civilians like me, who are not experiencing it, but seeing it from a point of view through media and propaganda. It is important that we learn of the effects war leaves on civilians, as they are the ones left defenseless with no weapons to defend themselves or fight back. They are the ones who suffer the most from the aftermath of a battle or bombing (schools ruined, villages destroyed, and workplaces demolished). It is important that before you declare war or even think about the possibility, that you clearly understand the impact it has on not only the soldiers and their families but also the civilians who build our society and economy.
