Dr. Demmer Identify the problem/issue and explain why it interests you personally. LGBTQ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer) is how many people identify their sexual orientation. The discrimination against this population has increased in percentage within the United States and Nigeria. It is usually extremely hard for this population to overcome the obstacle of coming out to the world. I myself am interested in this topic, as I have seen how my cousin has been a discriminated by his own family members. A report shows that two years ago 2017, there was an 86 percent increase in single-incident, anti-LGBTQ homicides as compared to 2016, where 28 incidents were reported (Anti-LGBTQ, 2017).

Another reason this topic interest me is that as I a Health Professional myself and as future Health Educator it is my responsibility to educate myself in matters that affect this community. 2)As a future health professional (or whatever your future career is), why is it important for you to know about this problem/issue Familiarizing myself with this topic will help me better more understand their feelings. I currently work with the LGBTQ population and my responsibilities are to provide Health Education at home and in the clinic. My main goal for my clients is always to ensure positive Health outcomes and address social barriers that may be preventing from achieving their health goals. I believe that the reason behind why LGBTQ are specifically a target of discrimination is that the notion of being different is still not widely accepted. The Harris Poll (2014) indicates that non-LGBTQ Americans reported to pollsters that they are less comfortable with their LGBTQ neighbors (In Three Years, 2018).

This is just one example showing none acceptance towards the LGBTQ community. 3)What are the causes of this problem/issue (include your own personal opinion as well). I believe that some other factors that lead to the discrimination of the LGBTQ community is that when groups of people get together to rally against persons in LGBTQ things tend get violent due to their strong emotions against people that are not like them. People that are still hiding their sexuality might contribute hate towards the community out of fear for getting disowned themselves. This leads to an overall cycle of hate for groups of people that feel comfortable with their sexuality. Pomeranz, Jennifer L,J.D., M.P.H. (2018) states that One such law, Arkansas’s Intrastate Commerce Improvement Act of 2015, preempts or prohibits local governments from enacting civil rights protections for LGBTQ individuals that are also lacking at the state level. State laws such as Arkansas’s undermine local control, damage the economy, and create injustices that harm LGBTQ people. Arkansas does not protect lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer (LGBTQ) individuals from discrimination.

NIGERIA (Mapayi B. M., Oginni O. O., Akinsulore A., & Aloba O. O. 2016) states in this article how homophobia’s perceive homosexuality in Nigeria. This article explains how both male and female same-sex sexual activity is illegal in Nigeria and discrimination against LBGTQ also called homophobia embraces prejudices against LGBTQ individuals. The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of homophobia in Nigeria. A cross sectional study was conducted sampling 500 university students in Nigeria, there were slightly more females then males, as females took up 56% of the population, most of the respondents at 97.8%, were aware of homosexuality. Only thirty-five respondents equaling 7.2% of the respondents believed that homosexuality should be acceptable, 359 or 74.7% of the students stated that homosexuality was immoral, in addition to these numbers 23 students had actually damaged property belonging to an LGBTQ person. The root cause of discrimination in my opinion is that it is widely and culturally accepted to denounce the LGBTQ community. Even governments allow for the discrimination to occur.

Describe mainstream attitudes in society about this issue/problem and state whether you think they are justified presents in a research one of the first attempts to assess cross-nationally discrimination against LGBTQ people through a discrimination index comprised of three components: criminalization and punishment of homosexuality, rights denied to LGBTQ people, and the level of intolerance that LGBTQ people face. LGBTQ people have faced and continue to face discrimination rooted in homophobia across multiple areas of political, economic, and social contexts. Research over the past twenty-five years provides insight and informs our understanding of why LGBTQ people face homophobia and discrimination that manifests through formal institutional arrangements and informal, social institutional arrangements. Researchers generally define homophobia as the fear or hatred of homosexuality and homosexuals (For the purposes of this study, transphobia (fear of transgendered individuals) is also included in the broader definition of homophobia as cited in Lee. Looking at both these articles I have read what I believe brings light to the LGBTQ community. 5)

Compare this problem/issue to another country The LGBTQ population in Nigeria, is going through the increase in homophobic violence, police harassment and arrests, challenges in accessing health care, and reports of cases of extortion and blackmail. The political climate for LGBTQ persons and groups in Nigeria changed dramatically after Nigeria’s former president, Good luck Jonathan, signed the Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Bill into law on January 7, 2014. The introduction of SSMPA (Same-Sex Marriage Prohibition Act) was a blow to the hopes and objectives of Nigerian LGBTQ groups; it transformed the political and social landscape by fomenting heated public anti-LGBTQ vitriol and creating an atmosphere in which otherwise ‘normal’ citizens felt that they were working for the national good in acting upon homophobic sentiments.

Since 2014, SSMPA has rolled back some previous achievements made by Nigerian LGBTQ groups. Without a doubt, the law has had a very direct impact on the lives of These are just some of the abuses now often reported across multiple news platforms and in forums that support LGBTQ persons. LGBTQ individuals are at a significantly increased risk for disparate health outcomes when they reside in states that fail to extend equal protections or that actively deprive equal rights to them. Locate one organization in the US and one in this other country that deals with this specific issue/problem.

Please make sure you choose an organization that deals with this specific issue and not an organization that has a broader mandate and deals with a host of issues. Describe the goals of each organization, types of services, problems and any other information you may think relevant. Give your opinion about how the two organizations compare against each other. If someone asked if you could recommend a website, movie/documentary, and a book about this issue/problem, what would you tell them. Write a brief blurb about each one, identifying the name, author/source, what it deals with specifically and what things this person would find interesting about each. You must write about all three (website, movie/documentary and book). I expect more than a sentence or two copied off the internet. I expect you to have read the website and book and viewed the movie/documentary. The more detail you can give the better. It goes without saying that you cannot choose the textbook. You need to find another book to recommend.

Make sure you choose a book, website and movie that is specifically tailored to your topic and not just about human sexuality in general. Summarize the main ways this issue/problem is being addressed in the US and in the other country you have selected. Devote equal attention to both countries. Identify one method/approach for addressing this issue/problem that you believe is good or has potential to be effective and explain why you prefer this method/approach over others. Here is where your grasp of the professional literature should be evident. As a future health professional (or whatever your future career is), state what contribution you can make in addressing this issue/problem on the local, national andinternational level. Be as specific as possible. No vague statements or generalizations. I expect you to put some thought into this and it should reflect your mastery of the issue/problem you wrote about.
