In this research paper I will speaking on the history and the global cultural impact of Starbucks. First, I will speak on the history of Starbucks, how they came about and what they have evolved into over the years. Through technology and cultural impact throughout the years.

I chose this topic as I am an one of the many that is always going Starbucks. It is the environment that most individuals, including myself, find as their home away from home, school or office. The first Starbucks was opened in 1971 at Pike Street Market in Seattle, Washington by three partners Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker (Study Moose, 2016). They were college mates inspired to sell high-quality coffee beans and equipment. Over the years Starbucks has grown significantly through technology and cultural aspect.

As of 2018, the company operates over 28,000 stores worldwide. They are able to keep their growth and sustainability by staying true to their mission statement; “To inspire and nurture the human spirit – one person, one cup and one neighborhood at a time” (Starbucks, 2018). They live this by following the principles of ensuring it will always be about the quality of their coffee, treating their partners with respect and dignity, to connect and uplift the life of their customers, make customers feel a sense of belonging by making the stores a haven – a break from the worries and ensuring that every store is part of the community. By living by these principles, they are able to enjoy the kind of success that rewards their shareholders (Starbucks, 2018). In our second week in this course, we received an article about coffee houses entitled “The Coffeehouse as a Public Sphere: Brewing Social Change”. In this reading, it touched a bit on technology and how Starbucks has used technology to expand and grow.

Technology has been an important role in any business, because in this day and age there are advancements in technology. Now-a-days many individuals work from home or via telecommunication and having the ability to just take your laptop in an environment that is not hectic and you ae able to sit and get things done is anyone’s dream. Starbucks is considered to be one of the most innovative companies. One example of their improvements is having plugs set up so that you are able to recharge your devices if need be.

As indicated in the reading, the example of Starbucks is used as a coffeeshop people go to for the main reason that they have drinks and/or food available within a few steps that wont really interrupt me from my work. It is a place that creates the perfect environment to feel as comfortable as you would at home, with all amenities, while at the same time avoiding all distractions to get your work done. People create a private space in a public space by using technological devices, such as cell phones, laptops, or using simple things, like a book or newspaper, the customers are able to define their private space through what they do (Parker ; Austin, 2011). In recent years, Starbucks has focused on reshaping their business and their business model that will encourage them to do more social good. In an essay, written by En-Ying Lin, she indicates that “In global consumer culture, Starbucks is vividly associated by consumers as being high quality, trendy, identified, connected to the world, sophisticated, prestigious, and distinctive” (Ling, 2004).

Starbucks creates their own distinctive cultural code and the people who go to Starbucks suggest an inner consumer culture. There are some characteristics about the company that attract peopleTake into account that “Critics of globalization argue that this cultural invasion will lead to the disintegration of identity and the spirit of culture. In opposition, its cheerleaders consider the decline of cultural distinction as a substantial sign of enhanced communications, a measure of integration of societies, and a scope toward unification of civilizations” (Ling, 2004).
