Internet of Things (IoT) Hala Yousif Mohamed Ahmed Abstract The Internet of Things (IoT) is the next coming technology revolution, and its purpose is to enable physical objects to connect intelligently through the internet using sensors, software and electronics. The revolution of IoT has attracted great interest around the world in all fields. In light of this, this essay is a comprehensive overview for IoT; moreover a general notion of IoT architecture is described, in addition to IoT applications and the real challenges, the essay highlights the main cornerstones of IoT technologies. 1.Introduction From an historical perspective the term internet of things which is also shortly well-known as “IoT” and sometimes called internet of objects has appeared and was discussed by Carnegie Mellon University which has the first Internet-connection devices around early 1982, In 1991 academic places such as PerCom and Kemp in addition to Mark Weiser’s scientific paper explained this concept in contemporary term. This essay highlights some of these challenges (section 4). (Section 5) introduce some of IoT technologies.

Finally, (section 6) concludes the essay. 2. IOT Architecture With considerations for the current and expected development in this area, many researchers are talking about the importance of having an architecture that fits the amount of connected things. In order to suit the internet of things such as networks, communication techniques and sensors .Also as a development of IoT architecture, several models are proposed, and sequences in levels ranging from three levels to four through five until six levels. Noticed there is no consensus that agreed universally on architecture for IoT, it was started with the traditional architecture that is considered as three layers which are perception layer, network layer and application layer. Then, the architecture was improved by adding levels starting at four levels and then five and reaching up to six levels as shown in Figure 1 which are described in details in the following subsections.

2.1 Coding layer Coding layer is representing the foundation of IoT. Each thing in this layer is given a unique ID to identify and recognize it. 2.2 Perception layer Perception layer is also called the recognition layer that deals with the sensor devices that detect and respond to inputs from physical environment and identify other smart objects then collect important and useful information and measure physical quantities such as light, pressure, sound humidity, temperature, speed, locations, etc., then convert them to digital information and pass them to the network layer. Coding layer Perception layer Network layer Middleware layer Application layer Business layer Figure 1 Six-Layered Architecture of IoT 2.3 Network layer This layer is the core essence of IoT and is similar to internet network. It is responsible for the communication and connecting to network devices, servers and other smart things.

Furthermore, it receives the digital information from the perception layer and transforms it through transmission mediums such as Wi-Fi, Zibgbee and Bluetooth. 2.4 Middleware layer It’s responsible for processing the information received from the sensor devices, which are important consideration for particular IoT that depends on sensor technology. Add to that it hides hardware details therefore enhances the interoperability of smart objects and makes it easy to provide different types of services. There are many open sources and commercials that provide middleware services like Oracle Fusion Middleware, MiddleWhere, FiWare and OpenIoT5. 2.5 Application layer This layer manages and provides the services. Also it contains applications based on processed data such as the disaster monitoring, energy, transportations, environment, healthcare, supply chain, retail and many more endless applications.

In addition it is very helpful in the large scale development of IoT. In other aspect, the main responsibility of application layer is to bind the major gab between the users and applications. 2.6 Business layer IoT is fully managed through this layer, starting from the user privacy, strategies, business models, profit to all internet related research. Applications of IoT There are different areas in which smart applications have been developed.

All of these applications are not yet readily available; however, researchers indicate that the potential of IoT to improve the quality of environment by using IoT applications such as environment protection, smart grids, smart health, fitness tracking, smart homes, smart cities, and smart world. In order to gather the data from the environment, the IoT applications need to have one or more sensors which are considered essential components of smart objects. Some examples of IoT are shown below. 3.1 Smart cities The main role of smart cities is to improve the quality of services provided while minimizing operational costs and enhancing the use of public resources to solve problems that may face the people living in cities such as shortage of energy supplies and pollution etc.

Many cities have already started to apply IoT, Barcelona topped the list of smart cities, by focusing on the smart water and smart transportation systems. In smart water system, by using sensors on water tanks and water supply lines to measure the amount of rainfall and weather sensing and integrate all this information to assess the city’s water needs in local, industrial and agricultural activities. Also, Stockholm is an example of smart cities that have created smart parking by adding sensors at the parking sites where the driver can inquire about the nearest position through the GPS ADDIN EN.CITE <EndNote><Cite><Author>Kumar</Author><Year>2018</Year><RecNum>36</RecNum><DisplayText>10, 11</DisplayText><record><rec-number>36</rec-number><foreign-keys><key app=”EN” db-id=”9e5vsw9t9rtdthepezbv9rsm2e2tfsvpxasf”>36</key></foreign-keys><ref-type name=”Journal Article”>17</ref-type><contributors><authors><author>Kumar, Mritunjay</author><author>Annoo, Km</author><author>Mandal, Raman Kumar</author></authors></contributors><titles><title>The Internet of Things Applications for Challenges and Related Future Technologies &amp; Development</title><secondary-title>context</secondary-title></titles><periodical><full-title>context</full-title></periodical><volume>5</volume><number>01</number><dates><year>2018</year></dates><urls></urls></record></Cite><Cite><Author>Sethi</Author><Year>2017</Year><RecNum>30</RecNum><record><rec-number>30</rec-number><foreign-keys><key app=”EN” db-id=”9e5vsw9t9rtdthepezbv9rsm2e2tfsvpxasf”>30</key></foreign-keys><ref-type name=”Journal Article”>17</ref-type><contributors><authors><author>Sethi, Pallavi</author><author>Sarangi, Smruti R</author></authors></contributors><titles><title>Internet of things: architectures, protocols, and applications</title><secondary-title>Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering</secondary-title></titles><periodical><full-title>Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering</full-title></periodical><volume>2017</volume><dates><year>2017</year></dates><isbn>2090-0147</isbn><urls></urls></record></Cite></EndNote>10, 11. 3.2 Smart home An application of IoT in our lives will be on smart homes considered as a feature that greatly facilitates our daily lives, Smart devices at home communicate with each other, so that remote home control using sensors which can help keep up the temperature, lighting, humidity, security and energy management. IoT challenges There are many complications, issues and challenges of developing IoT the most fundamental are: 4.1 Security Despite its good and important impact on the future of computing and communications, and hence the rapid transformation of the best way of life, IoT remains conditioned to the success of the main factor and the main challenge which is “security”.

IoT connects many devices, this aid creating loopholes for malicious programs, creating a new security risk and many challenges. It was necessary to find ways to address these issues to provide security and stability for users PEVuZE5vdGU+PENpdGU+PEF1dGhvcj5NZW5kZXo8L0F1dGhvcj48WWVhcj4yMDE3PC9ZZWFyPjxS One of the most important issues must kept in mind is the privacy that consider as one of the big challenge in IoT. There are some concerns about the proliferation of smart devices which can lead to privacy loopholes. Moreover, Users are concerned about their personal data and how to exchange it and keep it confidential with the expected increase of data exchanged among smart objects, there are many considerations for protecting data and exchanging them confidentially and keeping them from penetration.

Many problems related to user privacy and network layer are caused by multiple devices that communicate using different networks. Moreover, the intelligence of these devices which can collect samples and distribute information among themselves, requires spreading in different parts of the world, thus exacerbating the problem unless strong and reliable encryption systems to address the privacy challenge correctly.PEVuZE5vdGU+PENpdGU+PEF1dGhvcj5NZW5kZXo8L0F1dGhvcj48WWVhcj4yMDE3PC9ZZWFyPjxS Conclusion IoT is the development and extension of the traditional internet to provide many possibilities for communicating between things. Talk about the Internet of things cannot be shortened; it is considered as a new, wide and complex area as a result of its association with several areas, the next era, which is not yet completed, but some of its features became clear through the smart things that began to appear and pave the way for the next technological revolution which is expected to affect everyday lifestyles, but the way it will change and to what extent is unpredictable. So it will face many challenges. As a result to its importance in our lives; IoT is considered as an open area for hot topics in different research fields.
