National and local guidelines for safeguarding affect day to day work with children as the school is legally obliged to follow them as well as put procedures in place. For example, as a Teaching Assistant, I would have had to complete a DBS before I took on my role because they will need to ensure that I can work with a child unsupervised. I will also have to undergo training in how to work with children as well as safeguarding training. This will develop my understanding of how to create and maintain a safe working environment for the children I work with. 1.4 Explain when and why inquiries and serious case reviews are required and how the sharing of the findings informs practice. Inquiries and serious case reviews are required when a child dies, or is seriously harmed from neglect or abuse.

These reviews are carried out to consider firstly if there are other children who are at risk of this same situation and to reflect on what could have been put in place to prevent this from occurring again. Organizations will work together to raise any concerns they had regarding the case and find better ways to help safeguard and promote the welfare of children. For example, if I was concerned about a child at the school being abused, the first thing I would do is notify my safeguarding manager and document my findings on that very day. From there, the safeguarding lead would decide if my findings would need to be referred to Social services or to the police and family. 1.5 Explain how the processes used by own work setting or service comply with legislation that covers data protection, information handling and sharing. For example, we use software called Sims, which holds all the personal information about the children such as their address, medical conditions etc. This information is securely stored on the schools network, and only staff can access this by having our own individual passwords. The system also makes note of who has logged in and what they went on. All hard copies of pupil reports, registers etc. are kept in a filing cabinet in the main office that is locked with a key, and only authorised staff have access to this information.

It is important to have procedures put in place for handling and sharing information because it helps to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. External people such as a parent who would like access to information held on a child’s file would have to put their request in writing expressing why they would need this information so that it can be recorded on file. 2.0 Understand the importance of working in partnership with other organisations to safeguard children and young people.
