For example, if I was concerned about a child at the school being abused, the first thing I would do is notify my safeguarding manager and document my findings on that very day. In my school setting, we have implemented software that covers data protection, information handling and sharing.
For example, we use software called Sims, which holds all the personal information about the children such as their address, medical conditions etc. This information is securely stored on the schools network, and only staff can access this by having our own individual passwords. The system also makes note of who has logged in and what they went on. All hard copies of pupil reports, registers etc. are kept in a filing cabinet in the main office that is locked with a key, and only authorised staff have access to this information.
It is important to have procedures put in place for handling and sharing information because it helps to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. External people such as a parent who would like access to information held on a child’s file would have to put their request in writing expressing why they would need this information so that it can be recorded on file. 2.0 Understand the importance of working in partnership with other organisations to safeguard children and young people.
