“Mockingbirds don’t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don’t eat up people’s gardens, don’t nest in corncribs, they don’t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.” (Lee 119) Mockingbirds show courage, respect and empathy just people today, this is what makes average individuals unique and this is clearly shown throughout this novel.

In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee demonstrates how Scout, Jem, and Dill experience influences in their impressions of respect, empathy, and courage because it affects how they will act as adults living in Maycomb. Scout Finch is full of empathy and humanity for others, having a great mentor such as Atticus Finch she learned many lessons and manners from him. Scout displays her empathetic qualities frequently in this novel, she shined through the most when she stood on Boo Radley’s porch and proceeded to tell him how hard it can be to walk in someone else’s shoes.

Harper Lee demonstrates how powerful and empathetic Scout is, especially with Boo Radley and Mrs. Dubose. It is hard for Scout to understand what exactly empathy is but throughout this novel Scout learns so much from Atticus and blossoms into a mature young lady. Scout displays empathy again when coming in contact with Miss. Dubose, she is full of empathy and kindness.

Her kindness and empathy reflects on Scout and teaches her many lessons and helps her become a more mindful child. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird novel, she shows her reading audience how difficult it is to have courage. For example, in the novel courage is displayed by Atticus Finch in many scenarios, including defending Tom Robinson during the accusation of rape toward Mayella Ewell as well as raising two children as a single father.

Atticus has a large impact on Jem, Scout and the other children because they are the future of Maycomb. “I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of the getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand…” (Lee 149) Atticus is constantly teaching others and has the courage to do it, also proving how Atticus’ heart is full of love and sympathy for all of Maycomb.

During Robinson’s trial Atticus decides to take the courage and defend him, a black man. Atticus took the criticism and hatred but still had the courage to proceed with his actions. Jem receives Atticus’ courage and bravery as a father, and looks up to him wanting to grow up and be like him. Dill Harris is a smart, white boy who comes to visit Aunt Stephanie in Maycomb.

He is very close with Scout and Jem and does all he can to help Maycomb out. Dill may be small, but he has a big heart. He shows respect for Atticus and everyone in the Finch household. “I don’t care one speck. I ain’t right, somehow it ain’t right to do em’ that way. Hasn’t anybody got business talkin’ like that it just makes me sicks.” (Lee 121) After the trial Dill feels horrible about what Tom’s verdict is. Dill feels so bad but he decides to do the respectful thing and tell Scout. Dill Harris helps Jem and Scout with trying to get Boo Radley out of the his house.

In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird Lee shows how Jem, Scout Finch and Dill Harris portray multiple character traits including respect, courage, and empathy. Throughout this novel, Harper Lee demonstrates the struggles the children of Maycomb face, including racism and prejudice growing up in mixed neighborhood. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee teaches a beautiful lesson about prejudice, wrongdoing, and racism. Harper Lee explains to her readers that every human on this earth should be treated equally and respectfully.
