Of Plymouth Plantation and “The History of the Dividing Line” have some similar purposes to their narratives. Both pieces of literature are written to describe their author’s confrontations, good and bad, in their travels to the New World. Bradford’s other major purpose in writing is to target his Puritan beliefs and show how “God’s good providence” sustained them through trials. Bradford also shows his love of God by demonstrating how they praised Him because of His faithful hand, “they fell upon their knees and blessed the God of Heaven who had brought them over the…ocean”(Bradford 30).
Byrd purpose besides his narrative of the journey is to ridicule Puritans and Byrd brings the attraction into his lifestyle and the riches and pleasures he has in it, but does not thank God as Bradford would and almost always did.
