One way we see Roberts loneliness in “Ugly” is when Robert’s mom doesn’t show up to talk to the doctors or therapists. Robert’s mom doesn’t come to meetings because she doesn’t care about Robert, she completely abandoned him. She doesn’t want anything to do with Robert because hes a “ugly baby,” and she’s not ready for all the comments people are going to make of Robert, and how ugly he is. The author paints a picture when he writes, “Mom looked at me again and decided, she didn’t care about her son. About me.” because of this moment in the text, this causes tension between Robert and his mom.
Robert is really upset that his mom won’t take him back home,but Roberts mom is worried his own brothers and sisters won’t accept him. Second, when his mom doesn’t show up to the meeting; the doctors get frustrated because they don’t know what to do with Robert. Even though the mom is guilty for everything she’s said about Robert and her actions towards the doctors, Robert still wants a bonding relationship with his mom.
