Statistics show that standardizing testing on high school students does not correctly demonstrate how well the student knows the material taught. Taking standardized tests only evaluates the proficiency of a student only during the time of testing. Instead of looking at the test score, we should be looking at teacher quality. Another factor that goes into this is teacher to student ratio in schools. Teacher ratio to the number of students can have a significant impact on how well the student learns or how much attention a single student can recieve. Obviously, we should not be blaming the teachers for how well a student can retain knowledge or the material given to them. Teacher quality in the community means that we can look at how well the teachers are doing their job because this can be a big factor in how well the student does on an exam.

The No Child Left Behind Act was signed into law in 2002 The (NCLB) says that all 50 states are required to test their students in english and math in grades 3 to 8 and in high school as well. This act was made to focus on student achievement, granting all students to get an equal opportunity to obtain quality education. After No Child Left Behind was passed, the US went from 18th in the world in math on the Programme for International Student Assessment to 31st place in 2009. On May 26, 2011, The National Research Council report found that there are no evidence test based programs that are working. They said ‘Despite using them for several decades, policymakers and educators do not yet know how to use test-based incentives to consistently generate positive effects on achievement and to improve education.’ This is showing that these mandated standardized tests are not an effective way to portray how smart a student is.

Standardized tests create a sense of competition in the classroom as well as between teachers, schools and districts. The main goal in receiving an education is student success and using your unique knowledge to progress yourself in society. All people have strengths and weaknesses in school and life, some excel in math or science, some are creative and learn with art, while some like to read or watch and teach themselves. So why are we regulating something that is not beneficial to the next generations futures. Using competition in a classroom could be beneficial in cases for small games or learning exercises, but when it becomes about a grade it is hard to tell when it is too much pressure on the student. Of course there are winners and losers in real life but when dealing with younger kids, losing seems like a very big deal to many of them and teachers are taught not to bring their students down in that way.

Another reason why why standardized testing is not an appropriate way to measure a students performance is because, taking that standardized test only asses the aptitude of a student only when he or she is taking the test. The score after the test only displays that the performance of a student during that exact day, and not their development during the the year. eCampusTours an online student board says “Standardized testing impedes the assessment of a very important skill. For the most part, standardized tests hinder any sort of creative out-of-the-box thinking, which is a skill needed in college and in the workplace.” The student only usually studys when the exam is drawing close. Students are taught that there are only two outcomes to every problem, one is correct and the other is wrong and this does not prepare them for real life circumstances.
