Once a strong relationship is established between the children they feel like they belong and will feel comfortable about coming to you regarding any problems or concerns they may have. To develop a positive relationship with children, young people and adult, we must show them respect. We must We should be courteous and actively listen to their opinions and points of view.

We should be mindful that children and adults may be from different backgrounds or cultures to our own which may mean they have a different perspective on issues, values and beliefs. We must always acknowledge these views and respect them. Even taking the time to remember names and the preferred way to be addressed can greatly improve a relationship. Children – in order to learn effectively children need to feel secure and relaxed being in the presence of someone that they feel they have a good relationship will create a positive atmosphere for learning. For example, children that struggle with their learning or have confidence issues may find that they can’t communicate therefore, treating the child in a calm and positive manner will boost child confidence. One of the most important things an adult can do for a child is to talk and listen to them attentively.

Children need to have a good language skills to use their language to learn, talking is key in supporting and extending their thinking and advancing their learning and understanding. Through these interactions, children and adults can develop relationships that help children to learn about themselves and the world around them. Young people – as with children and young people learn effectively in the presence of adults who they have a good relationship with and who they feel they can trust. Young people need to be valued and accepted for the individual people that they are, they need to feel that their values and opinions count and that they are being listened to and that they are understood. Communicating effectively with young people is important for developing their communication skills, this will contribute to their confidence in communicating as they progress through their education and into adulthood. Adults- as with children and young people, effective communication also plays a very important role in developing positive relationships with adults.

Communication enables us to share and gain information about one another which creates a good starting point to forming a relationship. Developing and promoting positive relationships with adults is essential for team building amongst colleagues within the school and also with children and parents. This will help to maintain a positive learning environment that benefits pupils, parents and staff. It also sets a good example to pupils, showing them how to behave towards each other and it is also a reflection on the school and the schools aims of providing a caring, respecting environment where children can play , learn and develop. We should also be considerate and take the time to understand that sometimes children and adults have other concerns and issues out of school that are occurring in their life. This could lead to them behaving or reacting out of character or in an unexpected way.
