Handmaid’s Tale presents many themes which she used to bring out the images of many cultures and events in the society. The author is well known as feminist writer and this is due to her strength that is being portrayed in her points, and in this book, in another very strong way she presents a complex view of feminism. Looking into her many interviews, she is strongly pointing out that the nature of Gilead was formed in response to a high crisis which was caused by a drastic decrease un the birth rats, state’s entire structure and all these was as a result of feminist viewpoints which being espoused during the time she was doing the writing of the book.
Atwood talks about the novel’s mouthpiece which is responsible for the many ideas, his belief one of the ideas suggested by Moira was his belief that living solely with many women is one of the best way of getting solutions to the many problems faced by women. She suggests that women do have a limited contact with men, they tend to support each other and through all these she seems to suggest that one of the flaws in feminist community is the actual belie that women are loyal to one another.
The author also goes ahead to pin point about Offred’s mother who is another mouthpiece of a different case but who marched women issues like abortion rights, the ban on pornography and many more.in here we see how Offred is being embarrassed by the activities of her mother. She is not aware that the actual rights of ownership can be taken away but later she understands how lack of rights can really changes one’s perspective. Offred doesn’t consider herself as a feminist and as a result, she even hates it more when her mother tries to argue With Luke and tries to make him admit that feminism was the reason made him to cook.as Atwood explores feminism from several perspectives, and though she clearly considers its flaws, Offred ultimately seems to know its importance.
Atwood suggests in her other article (Margaret Atwood, 1998) (vision and forms) if women are given the trust and the chances to prove themselves, they will certainly thrive and never considered feminists.
