This essay has been submitted to us by a student. This is not an example of the work written by our writers.

When we think of our environment we think of the grass under our feet the tree’s that feed us our oxygen and the cars zipping by on the asphalt . However our environment is not all greenery and automobiles. Our environment also consists of the people around us, the things we see, the things we do within today’s society. This can also affect a teens mental capacity and their emotions. How we treat others is going to affect teenagers in their adolescence. This can lead to their depression. Some causes of depression are traumatic life events, social situation and family circumstances and medications and illegal drugs or considered as substance abused. These factors are all part of our enviorment. One thing that can factor and filter all of this that allows us to see into each other’s lives is social media.

Social media within today’s society is considered as our environment, as previously stated numerous event can lead to a teenager to develop depression within our cookie cutter society in which everyone is supposed to look act and speak a different way and not be who they truly are . More factors to consider the environment that would consider as influential to depression would be domestic violence, poverty , family issues and substance abuse, this is all of which can cause stress and depression to a teenager in their developing years causing the suicide rates have risen a seventeen year old from Colorado High School senior has stated that “ After hours of scrolling through instagram feeds, i just feel worse about myself because i feel left out”This is an uproar all over the United states even Chloe Schilling who is also seventeen wrote” no one posts the bad things they’re going through”

This has even led to thirty six percent of teens in 2015 reported feeling”desperately sad or hopeless or thinking about , planning or attempting suicide.Meanwhile a Psychology Professor at San Diego State University stated that” We need to stop thinking of smartphones as harmless”. The way we treat people is going to affect us through our whole lives. The world is constantly changing. For example we now have non binary and non conforming and trans. People that are finally coming out. This does not contribute to the argument about how the enviorment contributes to a teenagers mental health. However though this is part of our environment .Some people may ask what is depression. Depression is when you are feeling overly sad with a pit in your stomach and you feel as if no one else can help you or make you feel better . research done by Stanford children’s Health at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital ( In Stanford) states that some signs of depression are feeling deep sad/hopelessness,lack of energy, loss of pleasure or interest in activities that once excited the individual, anxiety and panic.

These are all things teenager experience within their daily Highschool lives, yes it’s something they must face and be a little sad sometimes but when are they too sad to function properly. We only see what they want us to see. Some teenagers feel more panic than others. There had been a study done in” the 1970’s it became apparent that the main risk for antisocial behavior associated with broken home was a function of family discord and conflict rather than a family break- up such as similarity “(Cambridge University Press(( Michael rutter)) . A broken family is a teenager environment, yes the data is slightly old but it shows that depression and mental illness does date back a numerous amount of year as we sit today only realizing it, because now we have to speak about it because of the harm its causing in today’s society .

The things that can lead to your mental illness , more specifically depression could be as simple as being considered it was a accident that didn’t mean to happen or a break up , but however it can go as far and a difficult as to a toxic work environment . this can happen when someone says the wrong thing or they completely mess up your work . this could be know as “ Psychological Detachment represent and avoidance of work related thought, actions or emotions . “ Meanwhile the biggest factor of our risks today would be social media. This is because we can see into each other lives and get jealous and this can lead to social media addiction which is found in many teenager today” researchers have found that using social media obsessively causes more than just anxiety. In fact testing has found that using too much internet can cause depression”(Anxiety and depression Association of America(( Sarah Fader)) With that being said when we see someone that looks so pretty and we dont look like them we have the ability to get jealous and angry and upset not at them but with ur self.

We today hold ourselves in front of a mirror and attempt to make the changes we think we need to adapt to someone on instagram or someone on twitter that just has the best body or the prettiest hair , but at the same time we are stripping away our individuality and replacing it with depression and anxiety and mental illnesses that shouldn’t even be there in this first place. We shouldn’t have to feel sad because we dont look like a celebrity , but we are sad and were getting worse every day. Depression and Mental illnesses can be found in numerous way and are triggered by numerous things but our environment is what feeds into those things the are slowly stealing our individuality away from us . Depression,Anxiety and Many more mental illnesses are caused by our environment . Do you want to be the start to fix that?
