Categorise mentee needs in terms of the Needs Model and discuss them fully. Give relevant examples

Need for achievement – refers to an individual’s desire to excel for main accomplishment or high standards. An example of a person with a high need for achievement can be asked by the mentor to work independently on projects that allow them use their knowledge and skills in a way that challenges them, but at the same time provide them with a clear path for how they can successfully accomplish the task. Additionally, achievers like appreciation that cater for their recognition of how well they are doing.

Need for recognition – Many people are driven by a need for affirmation, respect, and the adoration of others. A learner who show off about his/her test passed.

Need for power – have a strong desire to control others or the capacity to influence the behavior of others. Example a manager who has high need for power manipulates employees to do their work and later takes credit for performances.

Need for control – The need to control is the same as with the need for power. However, control is more focus on domination of events or situations than people. Example a spouse dominated and finally end their marriage.

Mention FOUR factors which should be brought to the fore in maintaining total confidentiality during mentorship

  • Store confidential records in secure cabinets. Cabinets should always be kept locked when not in use and access to the cabinets should be limited to only authorised employees.
  •  Access to the confidential records should be restricted only to those employees that require the information.
  •  Confidential records should be placed in a file folder, envelope or other form of cover when out of the secure cabinet. When the record is not in use, it should be returned to the cabinet.
  •  Confidential records should never be left in an open area such as an in basket or on a desk. The record should be returned to the cabinet when not in use.

Why should confidentiality be maintained during formal mentoring?

Ethics and integrity drives the mentorship relationship therefore the promise of confidentiality should be continuing through the period of engagement to allow trust between the mentor and mentee to develop over time and conclude their promised.

Discus any FOUR methods for mentee needs analysis

Interviews – Interviews allow you to collect data on performance gaps while talking with each learner or a group of learners or contact interviews by phone, in classroom, or anywhere in person and this it can be formal or informal. Sometimes, you can interview the representative of the learners if you are not indirect monitoring of their work/activity.

Surveys & Questionnaire – you contact a survey or poll among learners on a specific task or need of learner and use questions format such open ended, close ended, projective and priority ranking.

SWOT Analysis – The Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threats (SWOT) analysis is one method used to identify the needs of the learner. What are the learner good at, what he/she need to improve, what are opportunity available against what can hinder the learner are all identified and put into working? This also helps to determine where the mentee is at the moment.

Observation – Mentor watch the work of the learner on regular working hours and in turn this will provide enough information on performance gap.
