Lawrence Kholberg an American Psychologist was born October 25,1927 in a small town named Bronxville, New York. Lawrence, the youngest of four siblings, lived six months at a time between his father Alfred Kholberg and mother Charlotte Albrecht homes due to them being divorce. After graduating high school Kholberg searched for work and decided to work on a ship smuggling Jewish refugees from Romania though the british. During this time period Mr Kholberg was captured by the british and was placed in an internment camp that he later escaped from. In 1948 Kohlberg found his way to America where he attended the University of Chicago and earned credit for courses that allowed him to get his bachelor’s degree in only one year. After receiving his bachelor degree Kohlberg began to study and later received his doctoral in Psychology in 1958. As the years passed by Kholberg was later appointed Professor of Education and Social Psychology at Harvard Graduate School of Education in 1968. While studying Psychology L.Kohlberg was inspired by J.Piaget to write what we know to be the stages of moral development. Kohlberg’s theory demonstrates the six different stages of moral development in children that he grouped into 3 levels referred to as the three stages of moral development preconventional, conventional, and post conventional .

The initial instinct or first stage of moral development where children show that their demands and needs come first no matter the circumstance. For example, a child can see a table full of glass vases and the child’s bouncy ball has landed between those vases. At that moment nothing is more important than retrieving that bouncy ball. I’ll allow your imagination take lead in envisioning what could possibly happen in the retrieval of the child’s bouncy ball.

The infancy stage which is stated as Stage 1 talks about a child having the fear of being punished. At this stage the child sees no difference between making the right decisions and avoiding punishment. A child can spill something and while they are attempting to clean up the mess make a bigger mess. The child’s intentions of not getting into trouble outweighs the fact that they are possibly creating a bigger problem.

In Stage 2, which usually takes place during school age, the child seeks approval for their actions. Along with that approval, relativity with peers becomes very important to that child. So the decisions made a lot of the time by this child will be based on others including their peers. Amongst this stage a child will also comply with what would be considered socially correct adhering to authorities to avoid censoring.

In the final stage, a child would conform to maintain peace or put emphasis on individual rights. This stage takes place primarily around 11 years of age and up. This child will demonstrate self consciousness. For example, doing what is right, the child who has absorbed the concepts of justice and equality along with sacredness of life will definitely adhere to social contract and legalistic situations.

Encountering situations where Kohlberg’s theories would be utilized would be inevitable . As a nurse, when interacting with a child taking consideration of these stages acknowledging what stage the child is in would be essential in providing the proper care for this child. The interactions between the nurse and the client would be more effective.
