The movie about the rise and downfall of stockbroker Jordan Belfort. Through a fast-paced comedic voiceover, actor Leonardo DiCaprio brilliantly brings to life how well Belfort made his empire of corruption last, and successfully relied on the hard use of different drugs to make it throughout the day and even accomplish his goals. Through the movie’s entirety, Belfort becomes quickly involved in the life of corruption and addiction as part of his new lifestyle. While the high intake of drug he consumes is staggeringly alarming, Belfort successfully lands a helicopter, performs sexual acts in the office, and comes up with plans to cheat investors and deceive the police. In short, the life of Belfort is described as successful and fun despite the collateral damage it causes to his first marriage and his family.

As he describes how disappointing it is when he doesn’t make enough money as he wants, he rolls up hundred-dollar bills to continue snorting cocaine. His extravagant parties and chaotic events at the office are alcohol and drug-fueled, where everyone partakes, and no one seems to suffer any serious consequences for it. It isn’t until the very ending of the movie, that Belfort crashes his car without even making outside the house, and to make matters worse, he had his small daughter with him as it happened.

The entirety of the film describes Belfort’s drug addiction as comedic and makes light of the substance abuse in his life and the life of others. The scene of crashing his car with his daughter in it, is perhaps the only scene where he seems guilty of his addiction, or at least concerned about it. The man lost at the end, but with only 22 months in jail, and receiving over 1 million back for the success of this film, we can barely say he lost much. It emphasizes how glorious and fun drugs can be, and how functional you can be on them, even if you need stronger doses to do so. To be fair, had I been Belfort in this case, I wouldn’t have mixed my ambitions with drug use, because it can easily explode on you. But given the slap in the hand punishment Belfort received in real life despite his actions, it gives the message that “hey, maybe overdosing and constantly consuming alcohol and drugs is okay.”

And that is ironic, as this movie was praised for how hilarious it portrayed something so serious and so wrong in this culture, yet it succeeded in making light of how his actions surely hurt those around him. That’s why this movie sold, because it glorifies how easy is to get away with wrongdoings, so long as you serve a small sentence; but it wouldn’t have the same reaction had it focused on the lives of the families that were torn apart if one of their family members had worked for him and paid for it.
