There are also personal barriers that can affect professional development. Some of these are: • low self esteem/confidence – this can affect how much an individual is willing to learn • accessing training – an individual may not drive and may find it difficult to be able to attend certain training courses, they may not be willing to pay for transport. • Childcare issues/costs – if a training course is not during their usual working hours the individual may have to pay for childcare and may find it difficult to obtain childcare. • Learning limitations – everyone has a different learning style and some people may find it difficult to sit through a training course and digest the information.
Also if a personal has dyslexia they may find a course difficult as they may require extra support and are to embarrassed to ask. • Language barriers – if English isn’t the individuals main language they may find it difficult to understand what the teacher is saying or what they are reading.
