Are we too dependent on Computers? Computers help us with finding information, getting in contact with one another, and store our most valuable information. But we hear complaints that computers have been used to cheat on homework assignments, information hacking, and that they are becoming a new addiction. Both sides conclude that whether or not people have been too dependent on Computers to the point where it is starting to become an addiction. But, the defensive point is technology is growing and soon it will be the future, being addiction to computers is just people saying we are preparing for the future. Arguments on both sides lead to the question are we too dependent on Computers? Computers have their uses, but how much time and how much we rely on computers is proven to be the key argument.

In this point of time, computers and technology have become one with humans. Technology has evolved to the point where “we are all now connected by the internet, like neurons in a giant brain” (Hawking). How much time does the average person spent on the computer per day? According to Mark Alvarez from L’Atelier BNP Paribas, “the average American adult spends 8 and a half hours a day staring into screens” (Alvarez) whether it’s a computer or a smart phone. Computers were created as to help people with their everyday lives. Now since computers have evolved to the point where they can fulfilled a person’s everyday need, this questions if people now can survive without the use of computers handling their needs. In the past, people would rely on newspapers, books, and encyclopedias to get the job done, but now everything is assessable on computers.

Albert Einstein “fear the day, technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots” (Einstein) which begs the question, are people smarter with a computer in their hand or evolving into a lazier race? It is true that computers hold the majority of answers and information within the touch of our fingers. Humans have come a long way in a short time since Microsoft and Apple created the next generation of computers that bring a new era in technology, but in human terms, are we evolving or building our downfall? Computers were designed to help solve answers and communicate with other people far away. How is this working out for us? Bill Gates said that “personal computers have become the most empowering tools we’ve ever created. They’re tools of communication, they’re tools of creativity, and they can be shaped by their user” (Gates) which means computers have the ability to reshape the world.

People may see computers as a dumbing down our society by providing us with quick answers and encouraging our ego, but there are some good uses for using a computer like the digital bank account for one’s money and providing learning like how to solve a differential equation. Today, our society made computers apart of life. Is this a bad situation for us to be in? We do not have to be. There are more options for the use of a computer than watching entertainment or updating one’s social status on a social media webpage. Have people heard of computer programming? Computers have the ability to create programs by learning coding and using mathematic equations. Steve Jobs agree programming because “everyone should know how to program a computer, because it teaches us how to think” (Jobs) instead of using the computer to perform mindless activities.

The majority of people who love computers learn about coding which designs and builds an executable computer program for accomplishing a specific computing task. People don’t always use computers for their selfish needs, but instead find a good use for them and possibly help society by contributing a program that will help millions. Computers are used every day, but are computers affecting our will power to which we cannot live or are nothing without computers. Do computers overpowers our will? David Correll wrote an article stating “in a study, people were asked to give a personal opinion of whether they believe society is too reliable on technology and how they came up with that response. The results were one-sided. 77% of people responded believe society as a whole relied too much on technology to succeed” (Correll) which could be our downfall as people.

Today, computers are everywhere and absolutely essential when we are at school or working at our jobs. Computers have become dependent in our everyday lives that we can’t do things on our own without the use of a computer. Sometimes, we use computers to pass time, but does it affect our younger generation? Kids nowadays are spending hours in front of computers. It this okay for them? Lenny Kravitz believes “we’re getting so pulled in by computers and technology, and our kids have their face in the computers all day. The human relationship is being diminished by this” (Kravits) as kids become more addicted to being on the computer and spent less interaction with other people, face to face.

This could affect how our younger generation ability to speak, let alone write or read. Computers are a great tool to use, but an easy way to escape reality from people and the world, especially with the younger generation adapting to this style now. The creation of computers has been benefit mankind. They have various amounts of resources and information that our creativity and construction have improve over the years. How can computers be beneficial to the world? Nicholas Carr explain “as computers continue their inexorable advance, software is taking over sophisticated jobs in fields as various as accounting and medicine, architecture and law. Soon, our Silicon Valley magicians tell us, robots will be driving our cars and flying our planes, diagnosing our ailments and prescribing treatments, teaching our kids and caring for our parents, and, in general, orchestrating our lives” (Carr) to a point where computers benefit mankind.

Computers are fasters and easier than going to a library to find our information. We use computers to aid us to improve our society and our lives. Computers can help people be more productive and learn better. Will this cause people to use computers for their own selfish needs? As technology and computers continue to evolve, they will become a part of our everyday lives. Pablo Picasso believe “computers are useless” and “can only give your answers” (Picasso) from a quick google search, which can result in nobody putting in the work to complete tasks.

Is this what all computers do, give you answers to questions? Computers can do so much more than provide answers. They can produce documents, help businesses, share opinions and ideas everywhere, and fill in the cultural gaps of mankind. Computers are not always use for answers, they provide much more. Computers have their uses, but how much time and how much we rely on computers is proven to be the key argument. Computers are machines that assist or to help people with their live.

But people have taken this useful and tech revolutionary device and fail to see the true potential of this machine can really do. Instead use it as a cheat sheet or filling our egos to the point to where people cannot live without computers, let alone use irresponsible use them. There are some cases to where computer addiction can lead to some benefits like coding or helping the world. The only question is, do you use a computer responsibly?
