A sense of loyalty towards their loved ones is something all human beings feel, but when survival comes into play, the line is soon drawn and it is every man on their own. In Elies Wiesel’s memoir, Night, he shows the constant theme that self preservation trumps loyalty to friends and family by telling readers about fifteen year-old Eli’s life in a concentration with his father during the Holocaust.

At the beginning of the book, most sons seem as though they would do relatively anything for their families, but as the plot thickens, true nature shines through their disguises of “good sons”. Abandonment is one of the main ways Wiesel shows that kids are coming to the realization that in order to survive, they had to cut out their parents as they were dragging them behind with their old age and weakness and so they “… continued to run in the front, letting the distance between them become greater” (Wiesel 91).

Throughout the entire memoir, Eli has the chance of leaving his father and going off on his own for the sake of his own survival but never chooses to do so until after they survive a hellish ride in a cattle car to a new concentration camp. Some may wonder why it took him so long to give up on saving his father, but the answer is quite simple, as Eli does not want to let go of his father. In fact, it takes for another fellow prisoner to point out the obvious to him, that “there is no such thing as father, brother, friend … each one of [them] lives and dies alone” (Wiesel 110). As hard as the truth is for Eli to swallow, he realizes that it is true: he can no longer afford to be held back by a senile old man, it has come down to survival of the fittest and if he wants to make it out alive then sacrifices will be necessary.

At one point, Eli is brought to the end of his rope and even prays to a God he believes is dead so that He gives him “the strength to never do what the Rabbi’s son has done” (Wiesel 91), after he finds out that another son has lost faith in the one he should have always believed in: his father. Showing such a plea for his own life coming from a young fifteen year old demonstrates to readers the reality of it all and makes them see that people are having to beg their God to not betray one another because faith is all that they have left after being stripped of their most basic rights.

In the end, the statement “physiological needs are thought to be the most important; they should be met first” (CommonLit Staff 1) is and always be true. In situations with high stakes, people are taken down to their most basic instincts, which means that friend or foe is of no importance, all that matters is survival- even at the expense of others.
