When the Spanish official said ” the maxim of the conquer must settle” he could’ve been speaking about the land, and how they need to adapt and grow. When the English settlers came to the new world they also brought new laws, and social rules.
Some of the conquerors who tried to settle the New World were unsuccessful, but some were. Some of them couldn’t survive the attacks, and as a consequence they died. The conquerors traded with the Indians for survival. The conquerors and settlers could stay where they were, as long as the natives were left alone. That didn’t last long because the Europeans wanted more land, which started conflict. They eventually faced the Indians to leave, and the Europeans had everything.
