An individual’s brain is very complex and can retain and store pieces of information for many years. It is easier to remember information if something is interesting and important, information which is not so interesting will be forgotten. An individual who has dementia will lose the ability to remember information from present day although may remember what happened in their younger days. An individual with dementia may also have memory problems, these could be; They may find it difficult to recognise people or remember their names, this could even be family members close to them.
They may struggle to find the right words for certain things or objects They may repeat conversations that they have already had They may ask the same question within a short space of time They may forget appointments hey have booked They may misplace objects easier Get lost in a place familiar to them Struggling to take medication At the beginning individuals experiencing these memory loss symptoms may feel frustrated with themselves as the dementia progresses their memory will get worse. It is important to remember no two people’s memories will be affected by dementia in the same way. Their behaviour is caused by a physical change to the brain and this means the individual has no control over it, their behaviour will vary day to day. One day they may be able to follow simple instructions but other days they may not be able to.
