“Of Mice and Men” is a book about loneliness set in 1930s America. It is about two itinerant workers, George and Lennie, who travel together. George looks after Lennie because Lennie has learning disabilities. His brother Lennie is very strong and likes to touch soft things such as that girls dress and that’s mainly the whole reason they are on the lamb . Lennie and George have to leave this town on Southern California called Weed because Lennie is falsely accused of sexually assaulting young girl. When they arrive at the farm, Lennie is given a puppy and accidentally kills it.

He then accidentally kills Curley’s wife. In the end George has to shoot Lennie so as to prevent Curley shooting Lennie and making him suffer. In this short novel, Steinbeck, use setting and theme to deal with the theme of loneliness.”Of Mice and Men” is a good close hearted brotherly love and the is based off of two ranch workers, George and Lennie who go to a new ranch to work. Steinbeck raises the issue of loneliness in his book through the description of setting and the dialogue between characters.”Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck is a book that focuses on loneliness and the need for a dream.

It is set over three days and is about two ranch workers, George and Lennie, who move to a new ranch. Many of the characters face social injustice and are lonely for a number of reasons. Crooks, who is a black stable buck is the victim of harsh racism; Candy, an old worker, is victimised because of his age and the fact that he has a hand disability. Curley’s wife is a woman living in a male dominated society and Lennie, one of the main characters, has learning disabilities. Steinbeck has made his work thought provoking and shown loneliness through settling ,the novel in which the theme of loneliness is very important. The novel follows two itinerant workers starting at a new ranch, George and Lennie.

There they meet the other main characters in the book, Curley’s wife, Candy and Crooks. Lennie kills Curley’s wife by mistake and is shot by his friend but On another topic I’m going to talk about the social injustice in general through the book and life. In the plot of “Of Mice and Men”, all of the ranch workers got very little amount of money although they worked for long hours. They had only one free day and stayed in one room which was not large enough.

Generally, they were all in a lower status than their boss, they didn’t have a family or anyone to depend on. In addition to these, they had also suffered from the attitudes of Curley (who was the son of the boss) towards them, and they couldn’t do anything about it. Steinbeck used a very simple language with a detailed description to express the social injustice in their lives, so that everyone could understand that one of the main theme of the novel was social injustice. In my point of view, in this novel, social injustice can be seen best on four specific characters: Lennie, who had the six year old boy’s mind, Crooks-a black man, Candy-an old man and Curley’s wife who had no freedom.

Firstly, I am going to talk about Lennie who was known as a man with lack of intelligence and self control. Curley used this weakness of Lennie’s to make him angry every time. Curley blamed everyone’s fault on Lennie and tried to punish him. For example, when everyone was making fun of him, he focused his anger on Lennie and tried to argue with him.

This incident happened when Candy said “Glove fulla vaseline” and when Curley saw Lennie, he “stepped over to Lennie like a terrier” and said “What the hell you laughin’ at?” before he attacked him (Page 62). This incident affected me in a way that now I am convinced that people who hold the power always dominate the weaker ones. On a side note here’s something to wake up to about modern society ….In the modern society, issues of discrimination, inequality, racism, violation of human rights among others inform world policy. Why so much concern on such concepts with governments having laws governing people? Would it be ignorance, neglect or social injustice has prevailed? Unfair practices characterize social injustice. The unfairness arises from systematic deficiency of access to resources.

Despite the existence of laws to promote justice, prevalence of injustice is rampant. Unfortunately, social prejudice is a hindrance to development in a country. Just institutions do reinforce a sense of well-being, stability and satisfaction among individuals. Different arms of the justice system such as the retributive, distributive, restorative and procedural mitigate against chauvinism in society.

Nonetheless, there exist several silent cases of unfairness that never get to courts. Rawls indicate that justice occurs when people are free and equal. In essence, possession of the two morals that include a sense of justice and conception of good, constitute freedom. These two basic concepts form a society’s framework of social, political and economic institutions and their fit into a social system of cooperation.

Basically, justice entails equal opportunities to individuals.
