Some of the literary techniques Poe uses are repetition of words and italics. Poe uses repetition a lot throughout the short story.
For example, “I moved it slowly?very, very slowly, so that I might not disturb the old man’s sleep”(Poe 90). Poe does this because it helps the readers imagine how slowly and carefully he thrust his head in, so the man would not wake up. Poe italicized words that were repeating or to emphasize. For example, “No doubt I now grew very pale”(Poe 94).
The italics gave emphasis to how pale the narrator looked, he was colorless because of the ringing. Italics is used for different reasons in this story.
