There are different skills that students should possess throughout their academic life and career. Skills helps people to find new ways of thinking because they are able to learn new things and improve their self-confidence. Academic skills are essential for a higher education student as it enables them to learn how to manage their time wisely and work efficiently. This directly helps to reduce anxieties that could be faced during deadlines. Academic skills are important for a student to succeed in school and in their future careers. Listed below are the academic skills and how important they are for a Higher Education student to acquire.
Academic discourse
In accordance with the author Lynch, (2013), academic discourse involves the communication that occurs during a discussion in class and it is important because it helps to improve the way students interact with others. The academic discourse helps students to be able to communicate properly during debates or presentations. Students can help to meliorate this skill by increasing their engagements during class discussions by using correct vocabularies
Academic integrity and plagiarism
Although, gathering the necessary informations and data to complete a research work is not easy but students still need to avoid plagiarism. The internet contains a lot of data which students might be tempted to use without referencing. This could lead to the student getting in trouble with the school. Having a creative mind is a way a student can avoid plagiarism and acknowledging the works created by other people. By doing this, a students will be able to effectively think about new discussions
Academic writing
Academic writing is an essential skill which helps students acquire the right knowledge needed to understand and communicate well. It enables them to critically analyse things because they will be able to write properly. If the students are able to learn this skill properly, they will find it easy to write any essays without excessive struggles
Critical thinking
Critical thinking to a student should not be all about looking for important parts of the text, but being able to ask questions or think of other perspectives to what the texts refers to, with an open mind. According to Kasten, (2012), critical thinking helps students to think independently and help to create their own fresh ideas, which will benefit them as a Higher Education student.
Time management
Time management enables student to accomplish more and work efficiently. When effective planning is exerted, better learning can be obtained. This helps students prepare for the outside world, as they would have developed the appropriate behaviour for their professional careers, where they can cope with different tasks at a limited time
Conclusion
There can be no doubt that several essential academic skills are handy for Higher Education students in order to achieve the best results in school. There are different thoughts on which academic skill is most essential to a Higher Education student, but as long as the right efforts are deposited, good results will be generated.
