During the past year the modality that has most resonated with my own values and beliefs is the Person Centred approach. Its key principles are very much in line with my own.

It was Carl Rogers (1902-1987), an American psychologist that was considered to be the main contributor to this theory. The principles behind it are the belief in the positives of human nature and that people are innately good with a natural capacity for personal growth, self healing and can be trusted to make decisions to shape, direct and take responsibility for the way they live their lives. Rogers (1961) stated the client is the best person who knows the answer to their own problems and the key was to develop a trusting relationship, where certain, necessary and sufficient conditions were present, in order for a client to become self-aware, actualise their potential to grow, and in turn, increase their ability to find solutions to their own problems and function more effectively.
