The greatest problem facing the military today is not only keeping up with, but also being ahead of other countries as far as new technology and artificial intelligence (AI) goes. As of right now, the United States and China are the two leading investors in AI research and it continues to be a race to be number one. The two main fronts in this technological warfare are autonomous fighters and cybersecurity. Today, fighting is becoming more urban, increasing the need for better technology to navigate the areas effectively and without being detected by the enemy’s technology. This project is extremely expensive and takes a long time to perfect the technology.
Other countries are a little further along in the process and in the upcoming years it would not be surprising to see them start to use their autonomous fighters. Perhaps even more dangerous than the actual fighting automatons, however, is the fact that AI can be used to interpret and steal valuable information in cyberspace. This could be devastating to our military if a country like Russia or China gets their hands on our most secret information. Trying to combat such threats is the greatest problem facing the military.
