Both gross and fine motor skills are being enhanced by the time a child has reached the age of 11. They will have improved on the physical skills they have already developed before. Their body strength will have increased together with balance and coordination. Children will have increased also in weight and height. Young adolescents’ concentration can be held for longer and this enables them to perform more complex tasks. By the age of 9, a child will enjoy playing skipping-rope games and will participate in team sports where teams work together for a common goal.
They will indeed better understand that games have rules. 9-10 years old children will start learning how to play a musical instrument using their small muscles better developed. Hand to eye coordination skills are improved and children of this age will be able to play baseball, basketball and tennis. At 10-11 years, children will develop with a dramatic growth and they will change their body shapes (especially girls). This change can happen so fast that they may become unsure about their own bodies. In middle childhood, children will certainly require more food and sleep.
At 12, they begin the adolescence phase and they will experience significant hormonal changes as puberty begins. A growth spurt starts in girls when they are about 9 years old. This will end within a year of her first period, which is at about 12 years old.
