The first topic that I believed was the most important has to be Early Childhood Development. I learned that there are many different stages in childhood development. It starts with the sensorimotor stage, which is birth to two years old. These kids are experiencing things in life through their senses and basic actions, such as touching things, putting things in their mouth and trying to find things. Then, we have the proportional stage which is two to six year olds. This stage kids are starting to use words for different things, they are developing language, this is also the stage where they are obsessed with pretend play. The third stage is concrete operational which is seven to 11 year olds. These kids are grasping analogies, performing math equations and are thinking logically. Our fourth and final stage is formal operational, tis is for 12 year olds all the way to adults. They are able to mature reason, determine consequences and link cause and effect.
By learning this I am able to apply this to everyday life when I have kids because, I now know what my children should be able to do at the different stages.
My second topic would have to be the topic of aging. As you grow older your heart starts to pumps less and less blood. From age 30 to age 70, your heart pumps a entire quart less at 70 then it did at 30. Old age also comes with less strength. By the time a man turns 60 he would have lost about 20% of his strength. Woman would have lost even more than that as their percentage rate is even higher. Your bones also start to become shorter which is why when people start to get older they start to appear as that they are shrinking. There are also several parts of their brain that start to lessen which causes their reactions to slow down and they aren’t able to process as much information as they previously do, which means their memory starts to get worse as well. Knowing this allows me to understand my elderlies better in real life. It also will allow me to interact with my grandparents better because I now know much more of what they are going through than what I previously did. It will allow me to understand that I need to tell my grandma things multiple times because she wont process the information correctly the first time and possibly the second or third time as well.
My third and final topic would have to be “What Can a Newborn Do?”
Newborns that are born “normal length” are usually born with the senses of being able to taste things, hear things, see things as well as smell things. they are also born with several reflexes such as the grasping reflex, which mean they are able to cur their hand around a object such as our hand. They are also born with the sucking reflex which means they will automatically suck on things when placed in their mouth, for example a pacifier or they’re thumb. I am able to use this information in everyday life because they’re are many newborns in my life and knowing this allows me to understand them better and what actions they can do and cannot do. I also sometimes care for my cousin who is a newborn so this will help me when interacting with her.
